Anyone from San Diego or So Cal interested in carpooling to the first rally school December 7 & 8?
Seriously considering entering and need to get my feet wet first.
I have a truck so I'm not looking for a lift, just sharing expenses and some driving.
Thanks!

Hi Jen

We will put the word out to our volunteers and those who have registered. I’m sure we will find someone to help out.

Anyone with an idea on the # of actual "stage miles" in the event? I've seen 800 in some prior articles but obviously the maps and such are held pretty tight to the vest but wondering what the actual racing mileage is/was generally.

Sonora Rally brings new levels of rally raid to North America again.

NEW ROUTES!
Recognizing the positive impact the Yokohama Sonora Rally presented by Method Race Wheels, has had on the state of Sonora, the tourism office of Visit Sonora and the rally organization are working together to help make this year’s event extraordinary. Visit Sonora’s desire to promote Sonora’s tourism destinations has allowed organizers to plan routes that were previously inaccessible. Along with the new start location, in the capital city of Hermosillo, the rally will add two new host towns, Banamichi and Caborca, as the rally passes through the historic Rio Sonora. The route of the 2020 Yokohama Sonora Rally will have stunningly beautiful mountain passes, river crossings, and colorful colonial towns finishing with two intense days crossing the famous dunes of the Altar Desert. The adventure this route creates completes the vision rally director Darren Skilton has had to encompass all that Sonora has to offer. With unparalleled cultural experiences, local artisanal food, spectacular vistas, and new challenges in terms of stage length and navigation, North America’s premier rally raid continues to push the rally to world class standards. Special thank you to www.VisitSonora.mx for their enthusiasm and support this year!

ARAIZA HOTELS
Having supported the event for several years in San Luis Rio Colorado, Araiza Hotels have signed-on as the official Hotel of the Yokohama Sonora Rally and will be the host hotel in both Hermosillo and San Luis. With last year’s start and finish exchanging places, Hotel Araiza Hermosillo will host the rally’s departure for the first time. Rally Registration, Rally Orientation and Drivers Meetings will all be held in the Araiza Conference rooms. To further ease the arrival of racers to the Hermosillo, Sonora Rally is offering a caravan from Nogales, AZ border crossing Saturday, March 14th, concluding with early registration and a “Welcome” party at the Hotel Araiza.
The host of last years finish and epic awards celebration, the hip, industrial Parque La Ruina will be the location of technical inspections on Sunday March 15th and start line on March 16th. Two new restaurants and a gourmet coffee shop will be open during the Rally festivities along with the world class outdoor bar, making the “Parque”, once again, the social hub of the 2020 Yokohama Sonora Rally. The five-stage, six-day rally raid will culminate in Sonora Rally’s sentimental home, San Luis Rio Colorado. A fixture on every edition of Sonora Rally, the dunes of San Luis are rapidly becoming North America’s “Dakar” training ground.

ROAD TO DAKAR
In recognition of Yokohama Sonora Rally’s continued efforts to promote rally racing in North America, ASO has again selected it as the first round of the 2020 Road to Dakar. In an effort to encourage new racers to attempt the famed rally, the Road to Dakar is open to motorcycle racers who have never raced the Dakar Rally. Eligible participants will have the chance to win a free entry and the coveted title of the first official competitor of the 2021 Dakar Rally.
“As the world watches Sonora Rally alumni Ricky Brabec, Andrew Short, Skyler Howes, Garret Poucher, Petr Vleck and Kellon Walch, compete in the upcoming 2020 Dakar, we are reminded how valuable the Yokohama Sonora Rally, the Road to Dakar and our rally schools have become, as key training ground for North Americans.”, says rally director Darren Skilton.

SONORA RALLY SCHOOLS
December’s school saw veterans Ricky Brabec, Skyler Howes, Scott Bright and Garrett Poucher along with first timers like Alan Roach. The same school routes were also used in private training for Robbie Pierce and Bobby Patton plus AJ Jones and Kellon Walch before they head out to their first Dakar Rallies. The upcoming FEB rally school still has some space available and will take place Feb 15th / 16th in San Luis Rio Colorado. RSVP to erinlee@sonorarally.com with name and vehicle type. Special thanks to Mike Johnson from RALLY COMP for the support and use of your incredible units at the schools and training.

UTV CHALLENGE MAROC
Designed to give North American UTV racers the opportunity to race against the world’s best and tackle one of the best rallies in the world championship, Challenge Maroc will award a free UTV entry to the 2020 Rallye Du Maroc. Open to UTV racers at the 2020 Yokohama Sonora Rally, the winner of the UTV category will have the chance to race a big international rally that follows some of the original tracks of the African Dakar rallies. Sonora Rally will also help with logistics and partner support to make this a truly attainable and great adventure.

CABORCA - Although Sonora Rally has visited the area of Caborca in previous years, they have never stayed in the municipality's namesake, known for its amazing fishing in Puerto Lobos and ancient cave paintings around the city.

BANAMICHI - Founded in 1639, and currently in contention for being named a "Pueblo Magico", the town was part of the original Camino Real, connecting Arizona and the Californias to Sonora. The surrounding areas contain elevations close to 6600 feet above sea level, formed by several connecting mountain ranges.

SONORA - Sonora is a great state in northern Mexico with an important territorial extension, where you can find green mountains, vast agricultural valleys, a spectacular desert and over 700 miles of coast line of the Sea of Cortez. Sonora is the birthplace of ancestral cultures such as the Yaqui, Seri and Mayo which, along with five other indigenous peoples, have given the state its identity and value. They are also famous for having the best steaks of Mexico along with incredible seafood. According to National Geographic, it has the best ocean view in all the world as well as the majestic volcanic craters of El Pinacate Biosphere reserve, a UNESCO heritage site. The capital, Hermosillo, is a modern city of over one million inhabitants, and has been voted one of the best cities to live, in all of Mexico.

Getting to Hermosillo has never been easier. There are direct flights from San Diego (via CBX) and Phoenix.

If anyone is on the fence about entering because they don't have a navigator, we know of a very experienced one who is looking to team up with a UTV or car team. Please PM me for details.

NAVIGATORS NEEDED!

There are three, maybe four experienced UTV drivers looking for experienced rally navigators for Sonora Rally. Bike guys are also encouraged to give this a shot since there are many more of you experienced in roadbook nav. If you're interested, contact Darren Skilton via the contact details at the bottom of the home page at SonoraRally.com.

Here's the overview map for the full rally. The rally starts in Hermosillo at the same place last year's rally finished, at La Ruina, just down the street from the hotels. Stages 1 and 2 are in an awesome mountainous region we have not raced before. The first part of Stage 3 is in a new area as well, transitioning into more familiar terrain before finishing at the familiar Penasco Del Sol resort on the beach. Stages 4 and 5 are primarily dunes, with 4 being the longer and bigger dunes day. The final stage gets out into the big dunes but for a shorter distance, with the finish at Bosque Park in San Luis Rio Colorado, where last year's rally started. The highway assistance route is shown in blue.
