5/1600 questions

I recently acuired a Baja bug that was prepped as a 51600 car. I have a few questions:

Firstly, the previous owner had installed the fuel cell in the back seat as normal. Then put the battery directly behind the fuel cell on the little lip below the window. Is this stupid or dangerous?

Second, when I drive the vehicle just wants to plow straight ahead when turning. There is nothing in the front area other than a spare. Do I need new tires or to add weight? Whats the fix for this?

Lastly, there seems to be a lot of rust just on the surface of the roll cage. I was told to take scotchbrite and go to work. This does seem to help. But should it just be painted?

No.

Yes, probably. Brake before turning.

No. There are various coatings for tubing, from WD40 to paint. None are necessary, but all can save maintenance time. All require Scotchbrite to start. :(

Check the date on that fuel cell, no fun when it leaks.

make sure it has an open diff... not locked... my battery is mounted next to the cell, directly behind the drivers seat...
