If you are looking at running something that wide the only thing I would ask is are you going to truss the rearend. The weak points on those rearends along with any 9" is the welds where the tubes are joined together with either the flanges or the center section. We had a 9" in our trophylite that was not trussed and we had issues with cracks at the welds. We finally went with a big Currie Housing, we'll see how it works out. Hey go wide in the rear, then it forces you to go wide in the front too. Just make sure you have big enough glass.
Also you can cut the flanges off and shorten the tubes, you just have to find some shorter axles. In the long run don't even think about the 8.8 you'll have less problems with the 9".
