I am in the midst of replacing a leaking rear main seal on my 93 4.0. The new seal (Ford Part) has a metal ring that sits just inside the rubber seal. The old seal does not have this part. So is something that I should install or was it just there to protect during shipping. BTW, the metal ring looks/feels like it will slide over the crankshaft upon installation.

Thanks,

Matt

You do not remove the sleave from the seal everything is installed in one shot. It is very critical that it is pulled on straight. Its easier with the correct tool.
These seals are not driven in but pulled in with bolt and an installer on the crankshaft.

You only want to pull that transmission once..

good luck
