How does it know time zones? Will my buddies computer on the East Coast be attacked before mine? I guess he can let me know. I think it is all a hoax like Y2K.

It checks the computer time from what I have been able to gather. The virus is real, but I think it is over hyped.

hey, i dont think it is a prank, they found this virus/worm in 2008 and they found a string in the code that had the date to update on April 1, 2009. If you guys just want to be save about it, just tonight when you get off the computer just un plug the internet to the computer and to the modem. then tommorow do not turn on the computer. IF you do that it will skip that day in the system. Also even though u turn the computer off the mother board is still on and can recive information from the internet if it is pluged in...

So far microsoft has said that the worm if it does what it is so post to do tommorow it will delete the .Dll files and get information from your computer. so just keep it off tommorow just to be safe. If you want to see if you have it (Only if you have Windows/vista) go to Microsoft.com and go to the windows update and if download the newest update. if you can't download it or get to that page you have a good chance you have the worm. haha. I might have the Wrom on my computer but i am going to reformat it soon so i dont care about it.

The guy says it wont work to turn it off but microsoft told my moms Boyfirend it will work over the phone.

Sorry i wrote a lot but there is a $250,000 reward if you help find and catch the person doing this haha. I am close (NOT)

Microsoft doesn't know what they are talking about. Even if you unplug for the 1st, when you plug it back in it will check several websites and see it is Apr. 1st or later and then activate.
In regards to why it is in the desert section, I think the op figured more people would see it here than in the whatever section.

yeah, IDK that much about how that will work but they said they found a string in the code that is looking for the date from your computer not website or other servers

It's designed to look at 50,000 websites for instructions, so I don't see why it wouldn't look at websites for time. Even if it doesn't, all you would have to do to is include an if then statement to account for a skipped date.
i.e.
if date >= 04/01/09
then activate

I really believe that the people who make these virus are the same people who make the virus software to protect your computer. That is how they get their money.
