Some fun trivia for some of you old timers (and perhaps some knowledgeable new comers):

1. What was the first overall record time for the Mexican 1000 rally and by whom?

2. What year was the first Baja 500 and which team was the overall winner?

not fair in the days of the internet...
http://www.norra.com/history.php
gotta agree on that... i was tryin to answer off the top of my head... but i really thought that malcolm won the first mexican 1000 on a motorcycle in 1967... oh well i guess i was wrong

also if any one has a baja 1000 program it lists all the previous winnerws and their finishing times... as well as the baja 500... but just like all the cheating that score nailed the racers for during the 1000 i didnt wanna cheat by lookin it up on the internet or a book... went out of the old memory bank... besides i was affraid SAL would dock me 90 mins for illegally lookin up info!!! haha

Mexican 1000(Baja 1000) was 1967, the Baja 500 was 1969... this year was the 40th anniversary of the 500 just like the 2007 Baja 1000 was the 40th anniversary of the 1967 NORRA Mexican 1000 put on by Ed Pearlman

1969 baja 500 overall winners were:
4 wheel-Bud Ekins and Guy Jones driving the Oldsmobile powered Baja Boot....
2 wheel-Doug Douglas and Jim McClurg riding a Ducati

Nice work gents. The overall winner of the inaugural Mexican 1000 was the buggy team of Vic Wilson and Ted Mangels in a Meyers Manx with a time of 27:38.

Malcom Smith and JN Roberts were the first overall motorcycle with a time of 28:48.

For real history buffs - the first motorcycle should have been Dick Hansen and John Barnes. Barnes arrived at Ciudad Constitution 40 minutes before the next bike but the checkpoint wasn't set-up yet and while they hunted down the checkpoint crew (supposedly eating breakfast) Malcom and JN arrived and so the race was on to La Paz.

Ivan Stewart - I believe he got this nickname because he drove the entire Baja 1000 course in 1973 (or thereabouts).

Retired in 2000?
