bending 3/16\" steel plate......

What tools do any of you use to bend like 3/16" steel plate, for mounting tabs and brackets?? I'm looking to bend it 45 and 90 degrees

Where's the best place to get it and what does it cost ??

Thanks

Re: bending 3/16\" steel plate......

I think you'll want something on the order of a pressbrake if you plan to do much of it. You can make something from some properly formed tool steel (male and female dies), and a hyd press. How wide you wish to form becomes the deciding issue. Something like what I've described, as a guess, isn't going to be very rigid beyond 6"-8"
If you decide to make dies, remember that you'll have spring-back so a 90* die may actually be cut with a 86* angle. There are tables and formulas thaat predict spring-back. I don't have any.
Some steel vendors have fab ability so you could order blanks in the thickness and degree bend you want, and then cut out each bracket as needed.
Then again, for a tew parts you could clamp the part to a heavy table or in big enough vice and use a BFH.

Over here at HK we normally just bend it over our knee's(YA RIGHT!!!)...or like greg said a vise a 10lbs sledge and torch to make it easier, I've never priced a break but it sure would help out...

You might wanna look at one of the plate brakes from Williams Lobuck Tools...it says up to 1/8" thick, but you might get by with 3/16s tabs and such.

If it is 4130 or 4340 put it in your mouth and bite down really hard and pull down at the same time. :)
