I have been Using Bel Ray transmission Oil for my CR. I was noticing last time that it smelled and look identical to ATF. Was curious if anyone puts straight ATF in their bikes, or if there really is a difference between the two, besides about $5 a quart.

sounds pretty scary to me. in my dirt bike i ran golden spectro 90 wt synthetic gear oil. anything less and i kept getting metal shavings in it. many of my friends ran straight 40wt motor oil in their bikes with good success, just change it more often. i think ATF would be catastrophic.

I have never run it but found some technical info on gear oil vs. ATF. During the winter months I run a lighter gear oil wt and during the summer months I run a heavier wt. An old moto mechanic told me to run gear oil like this and recommended that I never use ATF as gear oil.

My dad was having that same discussion with a bike mechanic, and the mechanic's advice was not to use the atf, because of it's composition and how it would adversely affect performance in the long run.
