Dakar 2016 - Stage 12 - San Juan > Villa Carlos Paz

THE LONGEST STAGE

There is more than 900km to cover on the day before the finish, including more than half in the special section, with the exception of the trucks, whose dimensions are not suitable for some of the tracks on the agenda. In this semi-mountainous terrain, the vegetation which lines their edges might be a bit tight for them! This means that the other vehicles will also have to show dexterity. Fans of pure driving will be at ease, but they'll have to watch out for blunders: at this stage in the game, a mistake could cost them dearly.

It seems as long as SPH keeps it together, he should win. Nasser has a 20+ min lead over GDV so he should hold on to 2nd if he stays clean. But 3rd position isn't locked up yet. Hirvonen is only 5:23 behind GDV for 3rd. Hirvonen is 3rd on the road today, behind Loeb, who is behind Nasser. So Hirvonen shouldn't have traffic problems today. GDV is starting 7th, with Roma the car ahead of him. So Hirvonen will be one to watch today.
I also noticed that Roma, who is now sitting 6th OA, would be ahead of GDV in 3rd overall if he didn't get stuck on stage 2. He would be about 10 minutes behind Nasser. Other than that stuck, he has run a good race.

Still in transition. Robby and Kellon stop at the last gas station to top off and suite up for the special. This is in a smaller village so the crowds are relatively small.

We continue our drive forward while the competitors will soon turn north and away from our path. We are are hoping to see them on the course soon again.

Here on RDC we have lost a bunch of the 'leg humpers' and casual Dakar followers. The dedicated remain, year after year. Love Dakar!

"The American rider has suffered a blow due to a stoppage 12 kilometres from CP3 (after 248 km), having run out of petrol... It is all the more of a pity, because CP3 is the refuelling point for the bikes."
