Dakar 2016 - Stage 5 - Jujuy > Uyuni (Marathon 2)

Beware of Headaches

All round vigilance is required for this second part of the marathon stage: in addition to managing mechanics, particularly the tyres, all the drivers will have to pay attention to their own bodies' reactions. Entry into Bolivia is also marked by an abrupt increase in altitude, rising to 4,600m –the higher point in Dakar's story- during the day's special section. Technically, it is also in this stage that the rally steps up a gear, with the first off-piste sections as well as some navigational gems which might be a headache for some navigators…

Finally an off-piste stage, but it is at high altitude so that may wipe out any advantage the Gordinis might have in the rough if they are way down on power to the turbodiesels of the Pugs and Minis...

I even asked the head of the SA Nissan team to see if he could get me some scuttlebutt on the penalty but got no response...

ASO was handing out Diamox tablets like candy over the past two days (helps with altitude sickness) and also recommending Viagra to racers as it helps with blood flow...could have been an interesting evening in the bivouac!

withdrawals are quite low so far...the ASO wants a 40% or about DNF rate for the race by its end to show its difficulty...a bit behind that pace so far...

How come Creed is starting so far back today? He finished yesterday 17th? Was a time penalty added?
