Dakar 2016 - Stage 9 - Belen > Belen

Keeping a cool head

This loop stage will not really be one for motorbikes and quad bikes, which will finish the first part of this second marathon stage in an isolated bivouac. Prior to this they will have spent the day, alongside the drivers in the other categories, almost entirely off-piste, both in the vegetation-scattered dunes and on harder terrains, sometimes on river beds. Physically, the day might prove to be a significant challenge, as the mercury soars. The hardiest drivers will also be those who are the most clear headed, able to make the right navigational choices, a major challenge of this special section.

This one will be Nasser's or Stephane's, with a slight advantage for the Prince.
Wondering if the 9 time WRC champ will resume racing today. If he does he will be cautious and probably stay tucked behind Despress. Carlos is going to go balls out and is at risk of rolling it or breaking something. I hope Lucas can keep him in check. The American will do his best stage coming in in the top 10. Justin B's baby brother will stay in the back waiting to see if his boss makes it ok or if he breaks and needs to scavange some parts for car #1

Bikes were quite a bit faster to the first WP than Nasser. I don't know what that says about the type of terrain. Usually cars have the edge.

Would never have guessed that. Cyril Despres is the fastest Peugeot. Peterhansel and Sainz already down several minutes.

This is where his terrain reading expertise from moto riding comes into play ... Wheres Sebastien?

Looks like only 66 entries left in the car class, and today is supposed to be one of the hardest, if not the hardest, stage of the rally

Oh this is gonna be a good stage!
Interesting set of leaders at WP1: Terranova, Poulter, NAAT, Hirvonen, Depres! All within a minute in about an hour of racing.
