Big shake up yesterday and now heading into the marathon stage. Only a four days in now, the race is still not even close to being won, but for some it is most definitely lost. Joan Barreda once again saw his Dakar hopes disappear, this time he found himself at the bottom of a ravine while leading the stage. Last years car winner, Carlos Sainz, was down hours after plowing a ditch and receiving a bent wheel.

With a stage of 406 km / 252 miles and then 663 km / 412 miles of liaison it is going to be one lone day for the competitors. At the end of the 4th special stage leaving Arequipa, the vehicles will be directed towards two different bivouac camps: in Moquegua for motorbikes and quads and Tacna for cars, SxS vehicles and trucks. The competitors will join their assistance crews in Arequipa for the rest day. Then, before resuming the competition, the motorbikes and quads will once again spend a night in an isolated bivouac camp in Camaná to avoid having to drive at night on the long route before the 6th special stage.

Don't bother posting those elevation profiles, they are bogus. They seem to be the same diagram every stage!

Planet Robby reports that RG will start stage 4, about 45 minutes after Blade starts.

Fill that thing with parts so all 3 will finish the marathon stage.

  • 09:08 Big gaps for Brabec!
Ricky Brabec is having an excellent day. Rider number 15 is not letting up after 200 km of the special and is continuing to open up the gaps. The KTMs ridden by Matthias Walkner and Toby Price are hanging in there, trailing respectively by 1’57 and 3’16, but behind them it is a massacre. Adrien Van Beveren trails by more than 8 minutes, Kevin Benavides by 11 minutes, Xavier de Soultrait by 12 minutes and general standings leader Pablo Quintanilla is struggling 13’27 behind!

  • 08:59 Peterhansel opens the way
Stéphane Peterhansel is the first car driver to start the special, in his Mini 3 minutes before the leader of the general standings, Nasser Al-Attiyah.

Certainly not thrilled with the way things went yesterday but...RG could have EASILY thrown in the towel and been in a nice soft bed at this point...Guy is still one of the last hard men and you have to love him for it.

Newsflashes - 10/01 09:19 [GMT -5] - Moto
FIRST BIKES AT THE NEUTRALISED ZONE

The first 15 bikes are now in the 55-km long neutralised zone on the way to the start of the last portion of the special and its 146 kilometres, a portion on which they will have to remain vigilant due to a first zone of fesh-fesh.

Overall rankings put Ricky in 2nd for the race behind only Quintinilla who he is battling with for today's stage win again...
