Big shake up yesterday and now heading into the marathon stage. Only a four days in now, the race is still not even close to being won, but for some it is most definitely lost. Joan Barreda once again saw his Dakar hopes disappear, this time he found himself at the bottom of a ravine while leading the stage. Last years car winner, Carlos Sainz, was down hours after plowing a ditch and receiving a bent wheel.
With a stage of 406 km / 252 miles and then 663 km / 412 miles of liaison it is going to be one lone day for the competitors. At the end of the 4th special stage leaving Arequipa, the vehicles will be directed towards two different bivouac camps: in Moquegua for motorbikes and quads and Tacna for cars, SxS vehicles and trucks. The competitors will join their assistance crews in Arequipa for the rest day. Then, before resuming the competition, the motorbikes and quads will once again spend a night in an isolated bivouac camp in Camaná to avoid having to drive at night on the long route before the 6th special stage.
