Newbie here and I would like some info. I am building a blazer for rock crawling not desert racing but most of the rock crawling guys have no clue on good shock and good springs. So what I plan to do is get a set of Deaver Springs front and rear. Next plan was to get some King Shocks but I don't know that I can afford those at $300 each. So my next thought was maybe the Doetsch Tech Shocks, like maybe the HV-1 with a resevoir which comes in around $170 each. Have you guys had any experience with Doetsch Enterprises? Do they take months to build or are they pretty good at getting parts out to you. Or should I just save my money and buy the King Shocks. Remember I am not desert racing this thing just want a good ride and nice articulation. Here is Doetsch website. http://www.rustbucket.rockcrawler.com/photo.html

Welcome to the dez-people.

For 170 you can go for a Brand B res. shock or a Brand F res shock and get it dialed in at a reputable shop for about 40-70 a shock. With rock crawling you dont have a lot of work going into the shock so you dont need the extra volume of oil to keep it cool. The Deavers are a great idea and your best bet for springs. They just did a full size older chevy about a month ago. Brand K's are nice if you can afford the extra dough, but I would suggest going with F or B...although I personally have not had luck with the B shocks.

Race-dezert does not do well with shock wars so this thread might get locked.

That is cool. Thanks for the responce and I understand if it that happens. Maybe that is the reason I did a search and I couldn't find anything on the Doetsch Tech shocks.

Thanks for the suggestion on The CK5.com and Pirate site. I have been on both of them for awhile now. The Pirate site all they want to do is just build four link suspensions and that is all. I don't think they really understand leaf spring suspension like the desert racers do and the CK5 guys just don't have the experience with good springs and good shocks. Thanks for the help.

My dad was in a Blazer club for years while I was growing up and I think the best shock I remeber was a bilstein...although that was a long time ago and KYB was a hot shock.

I must disagree with that assessment. There's a lot of experience over there and there's everyone from desert runners to rockcrawlers and a hundred different ideas with people from young to old and everyone in between. You might not looked around good enough to satisfy your quest for knowledge.

You can disagree with me Stan that is fine, but I just haven't seen a lot of different springs and shock setups. I would like you to point me to some good pictures of springs that work good and shocks? I have showed you my webpage and the shackle and springs I used but not a lot of people get to excited about it when I showed the CK5 guys. BTW those springs are 51.5" long. You can check all my posted on the CK5 site and there is a lot of info on springs. Go take a look. BTW I had some top leafs made for my buddies blazer and they was 52.5" long and they work pretty good.

I've just went through a whole lot of posts over there and the only disagreement I read that you had was with mj, well that guy is just a a**hole in each and every post. I just don't see where you come off the way you are in this post, I mean come on, all the people on CK5 and POR, most everyone knows the score and has a clue. I know what you want, a good ride and something that can wheel, right? Just get a good set of springs with a middle of the road spring rate, some 9000s so you adjust on the fly, big tires and take the friggin sawzall to the fenders.

Sorry I didn't mean to come off on being a dickhead that was not my point. I was just wanting some feedback on shocks. I guess I should not have got into how I feel and just keep my mouth shut. I will be quiet now. Thanks to all for your posted. Again sorry for sounding like a dick. BTW this is the badest Chevy suspensions I have seen.Take a look at the pictures. http://www.race-dezert.com/cgi-bin/wwwthreads/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=shop&Number=21580&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1

I'd run a bilstein over a Rancho any day. Its for offroad not gonna ride like a cadiallac so no need to "adjust on the fly"

No problemo dude. Just don't like to see that kind of stuff going on, especially when there's very few people from the other side to back themselves. Oh well.

Yeah, that setup is wicked. I'd like to build some shackles like that for my truck.

FWIW, I took some Ranchos off my Yoter and put some brand B's on. The only reason my Sub still has brand R's on it is because I'm lazy and haven't built the mounts for the brand B's I have in the back seat of the truck. After trying the brand B's, I won't permanently put brand R's on a truck I care about. Ever.

From what I've seen, most of the guys on POR have a clue about the geometry. It's the fab quality that scares me. It's possibly strong enough, but it doesn't present well.

If it's for their rig and it works, does it really matter how it looks?

Does to me. That's the reason I don't get too excited about the local mudbowl racing either. They tear their cars up so much that they're all scabbed back together. Where's the pride in that ? I'm not saying I won't be part of scabbing something back together in order to finish a race. Just that the scab will be the first thing cut off and fixed if I have any say about it.
As far as Rock Crawling goes, I created a major controversy on one of my lists by stating that if you're rubbing metal on rock, you've either got the wrong line or you and/or your rig are outclassed by the trail. I never said that I could do it, just that a goal should be to drive it clean. A couple people insisted that it was not possible to navigate some of these extreme trails without touching down. I contend that it's always possible to not touch down, we just haven't figured out the line needed or the rig to do it. They didn't like that at all.

The pride is knowing that it works and it didn't take a whole money pit full of tools to do it. Or the pride is not having the money to do a full on fabrication/relocation at the time and just using what's laying around to fix the problem. I've had to do this to my rear shock mounts. No money to spend, so using a couple small 1x1'' pieces and the MIG, the mount is fixed. Doesn't look good, but by God works and has been tested to the limit and is still together. Don't get too hung up on looks. Would you rather have a rig with great looking work and fab that is more show than go, or a ugly piece of crap looking rig that can go all day and night?

As for lines in rockcrawling, sometimes there are times that body damage is gonna happen, not because the right line is chosen, but because it's physically impossible to get through without damage.

Fabrication should always look good. IF the exterior such as body panels and so dont look that great...no biggy, but fabrication should always be top notch...the persons life could depend on it.
