The rear wheels are atached to hubs much like your front wheels. The hubs ride on there own bearing and are not putting load on the axles. The axles are "floating" and look similar to tortion bars. The only load on the axles is twist or shock from drive line forces. Also on a standard rearend if you break a axle the wheel can and does pull out and your dead in the water. Think of it as being like a front solid axle (old school or jeep 4x4) but without the steering.
