...going from a 2.5" to a 3" shock?

The math is easy once you decide how you measure 3.0,
Piston diamater or outside diamater? Also add the reservoir capacity.

Is OD measurement instead of piston diamater really "1 louder" performance wise, or some marketing hype to make it "bigger"?

Why not contact the manufacturers? Bilstein, FOX and King all offer 2.5" and 3.0" shocks. I would also consider cost of each and of course ease of maintinence, parts availability.

i guess that's really how i should have phrased the question - does a 3" fox have
a 2.75 bore etc. just thought maybe someone who rebuilt a lot of shock might
have info on the amount of shock oil they use on one verses the other that's all...

...now let me see Pi multiplied by the radius squared. :(

As far as Bilstein goes...

BlackHawk 12" ~3/4 gal oil (~2,839 fl oz) , Piston Diamater 3.0", Outside diamater ~3.75" (depends on where you measure the extrusion), 1 1/8" rod

9100 series bypass 12" ~1300ml , Piston Diamater 60mm, Outside diamater 2.65", 22mm rod
