little \"shock\" on ranger frame

On 4.0L rangers, there is that little "shock absorber" on the drivers side frame rail, in front of the coil bucket...the bracket its on seems to go down to the motor...
anyway, what the heck is this thing for?

I think its going to be in the way of my new shocks with my new shock hoops...can I just get rid of it all together?

thanks, J

close, I think he is talking about the shock attacthed to the motor to the frame rail to help the tourqe twist of the motor.

My Supra has the same thing, it's to keep the motor from bouncing on the motor mounts.

If you pull it off...send it my way...those things are not cheap and should not be removed unless you use custom motormounts.

Re: little "shock" on ranger frame

i didn't know that little shock was so important. i guess i figured it was more for a smoother operating and feeling truck than for structural integrity. that's interesting.

put on your seatbelt...

I always thought it was wierd that I don't have one on my Exploder but my room mate with the same year Ranger does... Both '93s with 4.0 V6s....

I never really took the time to look at the two. Just noticed mine didn't have one and his did.

Re: little \"shock\" on ranger frame

Whats different? I know the brackets are different, but is the rubber more dense, enough to ditch the shock or since your under there with it all apart just make some urethane ones. On my 92 4.0 over a 3-4 year period I replaced 2 stock rubber mounts, and i still had the shock on.

Hmm, sounds to me like you should replace the shock with a 2" stroke triple bypass and a coilover for better torque handling. j/k

Re: little \"shock\" on ranger frame

Ford used fluid filled engine mounts in some year-applications. I'll guess those w/o the little damper have the fluid filled mounts.
We used 3" poly body lift pucks cut to fit in "Scooby", the wahoo machine's mounts. It's 2.3 though, so that may not work with the 4.0

Re: little \"shock\" on ranger frame

I got the word from autofab that I will have to remove it, Just like I suspected.
and that, yes, motor mounts would be a good idea...and autofab is making some for that application now FYI

thanks for the input...Jaron
