It might be worth your time to go to a c.c. in riverside, l.a. , or san Diego county and get some classes under your belt. City college in San Diego offers a fairly comprehensive welding and machining program.
Most likely I will be going to my local CC (OCC). They have a well known welding program to get all certs and I'm also close friends with the head machinest teacher there. I thought about going to Fab School first as I'll probably end up pulling another 4-6 years total through college. I'd like to finish all my gen eds along with getting all of my welding and machining certs. Not to mention my moms side of the family are all big construction engineers and I have put some thought into going to school longer to get my engineering degree.
