Today Dakar has announced its 3 year plan (see attached press release) to develop the new UTV class it launched last year. Below is a link to the regulations. Sonora Rally will work with ASO to develop and help US teams who wish to race the Dakar. We hope to have a Dakar Challenge for UTV's in future editions of Sonora Rally.

Not a finished product, definitely a draft.
    Surprisingly short set of rules.

1,874 pounds minimum weight, but with one or two spare tires? Contradicts itself.
Two rear view mirrors and a rear-view camera required (I think).
Fuel tank filler cap underneath seats?
80 mph top speed? You wish, with that minimum weight.
34 gallons of gas? I find that a bit scary, but I'm prejudiced.
Plastic roof allowed. That can save some money :)
Favorite radiator relocation point in roll cage behind the seats not allowed.
    Belt cooling fans are allowed.

Some items at odds with some of the US racing orgs (of course).

Some of the language seems to be lost in translation. I think the radiator thing is meant to say that air can't flow past the radiator into the cockpit, so that if there is a leak you don't get hot water blown on you for instance. Not sure though. I like that they mandate stock pivot points, 14" wheels, and 30" tires and some other stuff. The engine management section was a little hard to understand.

Intersting. It looks like SxS have future in Rallies!!

Nowadays Polaris have mot experience, but looks to be the least powerfull.
Yamahas and Can Ams , on paper, have more potential

In Merzouga (Morocco race organized by ASO, same as Dakar) there is a good entry list in SxS:

Just to answer some of your questions.

2 spares are mandatory so with 2 wheels. This is in the text -
The minimum weight is set at 850 kg incl 2 spare wheels

2 mirrors OR you can install a camera but the camera must be fixed mount, meaning you cant just remove it when you want. Extreme+ is using backup cameras on their RZRs. The french text says
Des caméras de rétro vision sont autorisées à condition qu'elles soient fixes. Means "authorized provided they are fixed"

130 litres is around 28 gallons. this is from the FIA regulations which prescribe a minumum amount of KMs/Miles you must be able to drive on one tank without refuel.

Radiator behind rear seats is OK but there must be a bulkhead behind the seats. Means you cant make a hole in the bulkhead behind the seats so radiator would be visible. Basically need a roof scoop and than you're fine.

Engine management is free - either what is coming with the car or from any manufacturer's catalogue but the system must cost less than 3500 Euros. Data logging allowed but within the 3500 EUR limit. So say you can throw out stock ECU and put a MOTEC with a custom tune, new dash, new wiring, but cant be more than 3500 Euros total cost.

Thanks. I think there are some translation issues in the draft that is circulating.

2 spares are mandatory so with 2 wheels. This is in the text -
The minimum weight is set at 850 kg incl 2 spare wheels

That is followed by the statement:

"This is the weight of the car without fuel at any time during the competition, with one spare wheel."
Probably a typo or a translation issue.

The English translation is incorrect then, because it states the car must have mirrors, and the camera is compulsory.

130 litres is around 28 gallons. this is from the FIA regulations which prescribe a minumum amount of KMs/Miles you must be able to drive on one tank without refuel.

130 liters is 35 gallons US, 28 gallons UK. However necessary for the distances, it is a lot of fuel in a small vehicle.

Somehow the translation mixups will result in penalties for RG. :):p:)

I find it interesting that the wheel travel is limited to 18 inches. So if you are running a Can Am X3 with 24 inches of rear wheel travel you would have to install shock spacers or limit straps.

And are the wheels really limited to 14"? Most run 15"ers.
