GOVERNOR DAVIS NAMES MEMBER TO THE OFF-HIGHWAY MOTOR VEHICLE RECREATION COMMISSION 3/19/2002


SACRAMENTO

Governor Gray Davis today announced the appointment of Robert F. Chavez as a member of the Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Commission.

Mr. Chavez, 43, of Encino, has a 30-year background in off-highway motor sports and more than 15 years of experience in real estate. He began riding a mini-bike at age seven and has progressed to riding motorcycles in a variety of off-road events in California, Nevada and Mexico. Mr. Chavez enjoyed a successful motorcycle racing career competing in such events as "Barstow to Vegas" and "Adelanto Grand Prix." He continues to enjoy his sport through trails and desert riding. In 1983, Mr. Chavez joined the Travers Realty Corporation and remained there until 1995, most recently as an Associate Broker. He then served from 1995 to 1998 as an Executive Vice President/Principal Partner for Metrospace Corporation. In 1998, Mr. Chavez became President of The Staubach Company, where he still works. He earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Southern California.

The Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Commission creates off-highway motor vehicle policy and authorizes expenditures. Members do not receive a salary. This position does not require Senate confirmation.

Who would Davis appoint him? It seems like this guy would like to keep the deserts open where as Davis would like to close the deserts. I would think that Davis would appoint a "tree hugger."

No Davis doesn't want to close the desert - he realizes that OHV recreation on a whole is not going anywhere and that we are a powerful group of people that consist of around 3.5 million users in California and pump about $6 billion into california's economy, he knows we must be worked with not against. From what I understand the enviros have been bitching at him for awhile and he has left us alone and he saved the Green Sticker fund from being raided by the many other depts that were after it and supported our bid to keep the OHVMR around for another few years (there was a sunset date that just passed) According to CORVA, SDORC and the many groups that have been doing this for years, Davis is the only govenor to step up and realize that. Rusty Arrayas (totally blew the spelling on that name) is a supporter and head of parks and rec (also in an election this year) and Rusty appointed Dave Widell who has worked very hard to get the enviros and OHV to come to an understanding in teh OHVMR. So hopefully in this next appt for the OHVMR commission, Herb Wesson the speaker of the assy (he is from Culver City) will appoint a recreationalist.
