what are you all running for speedos on bikes/quads? I have tried everything but they all fail in baja... the trailtech computer, the handheld GPS's... even the watch type runner GPS's don't seem to last a race.

My basic trailtech has worked well.
Custom mount and grease on the contacts.
Wire -zip-tied to the backside of the brake line.

The Arctic Cat has a stock speedo right next to the tv remote and below the microwave. I hope it is accurate.

Thats funny right there.

I remember when Honda came out with their first Quad racers- they were coined, "The flying couch".

Sounds like you built on that...

CraigChr you should be very worried I was following you on the IRC site and after mile 395 it had you all over the map as much as 4 or 5 mile off the course and going the wrong way. Hope it was just a web site thing.

4 or 5 miles off huh? Funny how the tracking site does that. We do not take course cuts. Better line, yes. But not cuts. The only thing I'm worried about is speed- All of our speedos break...

Yes the Fortrex 201 is decent and probably the most popular (and better than the 101 with replaceable batteries) but they are still crap. They can't take the abuse. Pop one open and you'll see how cheesey they are.
You can make them slightly more reliable by adding some solder or glue on the internal connections.

Some teams have extra 201's at pits located before paved sections, just in case.

Years ago SCORE painted white stripes on the Hwy at 1mi. intervals. That was super easy to figure 60 with just a wrist watch. And the lines were there a week ahead of race date so you could practice it. Recently I asked Sal if they could do that again, he said they aren't allowed to do that anymore (but they can spray paint booth outlines & numbers for Contingency on the street).
but i digress...

that would be great- We have enough stuff to worry about breaking at this point-

I've never raced Mexico. What kind of line or how much time is the "San Vicente" course deviation saving sombody?

If its the one Im thinking of, cuts through a flat area as the course veers to the left. Saves a little less than a mile. Somebody correct me if Im wrong there. The other area is bypassing the silt beds in Uruapan near the Cemetary

10-15 seconds max on a bike or car. The "Race course" was cut out of the edge of the hill and at the 1000 offered more silty sections but also more rocks as it was cut from nothing and non-improved, they ran a blade to make the course. The low line "cheater line" opens up to the right and if you took it from the beginning you would pass over some of the edge of a wheat field and then on the smoother rolling hill edge vs. the back and forth of the "race course".

The second half of the San Vicente line is just another road now that was used at the 1000 too. I think they should have docked people from running the first part in the wheat but not the second part on what is now an established trail.
