what are truckas like the "luxury/ TT prerunners" using for there transmissions?

I have a mixed feelings about going t400 in my truck cause its only a 3 speed and my plans are to build it then trailer it to baja and drive it everywhere so that means long drives on the highway with a 3 speed thats annoying and reved out as well. I was looking at trememc t 56 transmissions too and they are 6 speeds transmissions which would be good for my needs. 1 2 3 4 inthe dirt 5 and 6 for the long cruising ont he high ways.

is there anythign i could do to a t400 to make it crusie better onthe highway? should i look at a different trans? i dont want anything that requires a computer to operate that is a key factor.

4L80E is the way to go. My truck runs 37's with 4.88 gears and cruises on the highway @ 75-80mph no problem

You can put an overdrive in a TH400 or build a 4L80E (I think thats correct). I have been told the gear options on the 4L80E are not great for offroad and you have to run more gear in the rear but they are doable. The black newer F150 prerunner of Nick Baldwins that was finished last year has a 4L80E in it. Culhane can help you out and has a lot of good information.

My choices would be in the following order:

4L80E
Viperized T-56
T400 w/ gear vender

The T-56 is only second because I like an slushbox in the desert better (I normally prefer manuals in everything else).

finish line transmissions builds these things up pretty good from what I hear. And if you have a gm transmission already you send in your housing and they send you a built one and it is a lot cheaper.

What are you looking at power wise? 80e might not be ideal. They rob a good bit of power as well.
X2... a 4L65 or 200r4 may be better. 4L80E and T400 rob a lot of power.

it needs to 100% manual. I do not want to run a stand alone computer system for the trans. I told the engine builder 300 to 350 hp as reliable as possible is what I wanted said its should be doable easily so thats what im looking for

Weight/power is still a bit of an issue, but we ran a LQ9/4l80e non-electronic from Transmission Center with a ratchet shifter in the drag car.
