I am going to throw together a bumper some time this weekend and I'm looking for designs. I was looking through the readers rides, but there are hardly any trucks that are using their tailgate still, which I need to do. Anyone have any pics of their or friends trucks with a tubular rear bumper, while still using the tailgate. Thanks, Tim

92F150 and I made this one on my Ranger a while back. It is just a simple design, but allows full use of the tailgate.

Thats nice, what are the two holes cut in the bed for. Are those shock mounts or your shackles?

Tim- I don't have any pics, but I once had a Ford that I replaced the tailgate with a tube tailgate that still locked and worked off the hinges. It looked kinda like bed supports, with a few other tubes running across the top and through the middle. I made the hole in the center just the right size so a 33x 12.50 would fit with a little sticking out and would be held in place with a ratchet strap. That made it easy to get out of the way if I needed the bed.

If your gonna go, go BIG

Sorry I can't come up with a better picture of my rear bumper, but this one is built to be a bolt on. It wraps around the sides and bolts to the frame, and also bolts to the old stock tire carrier under the bed in two spots.

I like the way that one looks. I think that I am going to try and do something like it.
The race truck one looks super stout!! Tim

Well I made a nice simple bumper, but I didn't think about a place to put the license plate and any place it can go on the bumper just looks gay. Anyone have a creative suggestions for mounting my plate... anywhere. Or anyone know what is the minimums to make it legal or close. Thanks, Tim

Mount it on the tail gate. The law says it needs to be lit.

Go down to the junkyard and pull a recessed plastic plate assembly off a newer car. Cut a hole in your tailgate and mount it up. Looks clean, easy, cheap and usually has lights included in the recessed assembly.

It's never too late to be what you might have been....

How were you thinking of mounting it to the tailgate, screws?

I assume your tailgate has access pannels on the inner side of it. Get access to the inside, and tack weld a couple of tabs and secure the recessed plate holder inside the tailgate so it is super clean. A lot of 4x4 guys do that. You can find some pics and a step by step in the Toy section of PIRATE4X4.COM.
