It's rally time here in Baja, well not exactly Baja since we are in other state (Sonora) but it is close enough to still feel at home. Today we got contingency day, followed by the press conference, rally school and drivers meeting. Dozens of bikes and some cars gathered today to take the challenge of navigate thru the dunes of the beautiful Sonora DeZert.

Here's a little bit of what we could catch during the day, tomorrow the action starts at 9am and the first bike is expected to arrive at 1:30pm, easy day... maybe.

We are on the course now at the first WP.
They started in 2 minutes intervals and after 8km we already see big spreads. We also saw few bikes circling the first bikes searching in circles to hit this point.

Next we head to a WP in the dunes close to today's 230km(?) stage.

    Good day so far.

We don't have exact results but it appears that most competitors completed today's stage.

Lots have tiny prep situations going now. The Mercedes's g-Wagen has a very noise fuel pump that needs attention. The Jergensen TT that was the fastest four wheeled vehicle today is peeping the best for tomorrow.

One rider dehydrated but was picked up and is doing ok. We actually searched for him for a while in the dunes after we heard the radio call and it sounded very close to our location.

The weather was in the mid 90s all day.

Hospitality by the promoter is amazing and we after one day fell in love with this event.

Tomorrow is shorter but tougher from what we gathered.

Ernesto is editing some photos right now and will post I this thread momentarily.

Ill read a bit about Abu Dhabi before today's early bedtime.

We had a wonderful day - what a beautiful place and awesome track.

We finished second in the 4-Wheeled vehicles after spending 70 minutes (we will get that back) with a downed rider. 2016 RZR 1000 performed flawlessly and we hit all the WPM's without getting lost. We just didn't have the top speed needed to compete with the Jergensen TT on the many KM's of fast two track. We were able to take some better lines in the dunes, but the speed was needed.

Lots of fun - this Rally has mucho potential.

Just got back from the first 2 days of the Sonora Rally. I am proud to say that Darren, Scott and the Team Sonora has lifted the event to the next level. There are 3 factory bike teams racing. Cars vary from UTV to TT/Prerunners. 90% got thru the dunes the first day. Even the navigator rookies who attended school the night before. It gets tougher but I am a firm believer a Jeepspeed style 4x4 with a good driver and navigator could place well. If you dream of Dakar but don't have the $million to do it, put the Sonora Rally on your bucket list. Its as close as it gets. www.sonorarally.com......Race-Dezert, thank you for your coverage and live tracking.....keep it coming.
