Forgive me if the answer is obvious... but why do some people tape up their axles? I have seen this on multiple cars and cannot think of the reasoning.

I’ve always done it to keep them from getting sand blasted and keep down on rocks nicking them, which can quickly turn into a crack which then turns into a broken axle.

This might be a dumb idea. But why not dip them in urethane like tool handles? One quick pass with a razor knife and it comes right off. Beats trying to peel off tape and having a bunch of residue to deal with.

i put oil on them before the tape,no rust or sandblasting.yes the tape will stick to it self.

I started using large diameter heat shrink material. Very durable and no glue

I have seen thin wall PVC pipe used as well, then that being held on with electrical tape. Holds up very well.
