FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE…

The ALMOST TOTALLY GPS
DESERT ENDURO & FUN RUN

California City, CA – Saturday, June 14, 2003 is the date for the first-ever “Almost Totally GPS Desert Enduro and Fun Run at California City, CA.
BP MotorSports’ Lou Peralta made the announcement for this unique event. “It’s not a race,” Lou says, “but we think it’s going to be as good and as fun as any off-road event we’ve been involved in,” he added.
The event will be run entirely in the deserts of California City, and it’s very similar to an Enduro with checkpoints and hidden checks, and certain speeds which will have to be maintained in order to “zero” each check and earn “bonus” points. If you arrive too early at a check or at a “secret check” you may loose from 5 to 10 points for each minute. If you’re running late and arrive late, you will loose from 2 to 6 minutes for each late check.

The “Almost Totally GPS Desert Enduro & FunRun” is just that; fun, fun, fun! There will be two categories of classes: GPS and Non-GPS. According to Peralta, “we want everyone to participate, even if they don’t have a GPS. We’re planning to provide a route book for the non-GPS racers with “tulip” notes and average speeds to get around the course. The GPS Classes will work with a similar book but will also have GPS coordinates at key sections of the course. Moreover, GPS entries will have to find several spots along the course where they need to collect a special card and bring it to the finish.” He added, “It’s not as complicated as it may sound,” says Peralta. “We’re planning on an approximate 60-mile route, which will include hill climbs, washes, knarly dirt trails and fast dirt roads. Almost everyone should be able to make it around the course, except maybe if you’re driving a low-rider car. However, we recommend 4-WD for more fun and enjoyment,” he concluded

The Desert Enduro will have classes for street legal Mini and Full size trucks, Mini and Full size SUVs, 4WD Open Vehicles (like Jeeps, Hummers, Baja Bugs); and also green sticker or red sticker off-road vehicles, including pre-runners, off-road racecars, sand/dirt buggies, motorcycles and ATVs. “Every vehicle must be licensed whether street legal or off-road OHV legal,” according to Peralta.

Participants will line up according to Class and Division. Saturday’s start is set for 9 a.m. Each vehicle will leave at 30-second intervals. It’s anticipated that Motorcycles and ATVs will start first, and then there will be about a 30-minute respite before all four-wheel vehicles get underway.

Once again the Peraltas wants to emphasize that this is NOT A RACE, but an Enduro and Fun Run. The skill level is to maintain the speeds required on the charts, which can vary from 5 m.p.h. to 25-30 m.p.h.; and also try to “zero” each check and surprise check along the way. For those using GPS they will have to make it around the course and also pick up special cards, all using GPS coordinates.

A huge per-run Father’s Day BBQ and party is planned Saturday night (location to be announced) after the event, followed by the awards, before everyone heads home for their big Father’s Day celebration. Those who wish to stay overnight, can camp out at the finish area for the event, located just three miles East of California City.

Entries are $50.00 per vehicle for those participating in the GPS category; and $65.00 per vehicle for those in the Non-GPS category. Participants, co-pilots and riders in each vehicle must sign a liability release form and must have a wrist band during the event. The same wrist band will be used to award special prizes during the awards ceremonies.
Entry form and additional details will be posted shortly on the BP MotorSports site which is: http://www.bpmotorsports.net. You can also contact BPMS at 760-373-2198.

Those signed up by June 1 will get a free event t-shirt (valued $20.00 each). The GPS coordinates for those singed up by June 11 will be available via e-mail only on that date. Non-GPS entries can pick up the route book at Friday’s registration and check-in. THERE’S NO PRE-RUNNING OF THE ROUTE.

• Registration and check-in is Friday night (June 13) from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. location TBA.

• Entries open May 15, and the start order is based on a first-come-first-serve, by Class. Sign up early. Prizes and excellent trophies will be awarded for Overall winners and also Class champs using the 30% percent rule.

SPECIAL NOTE:
Interested sponsors or co-sponsors of the event and/or anyone, who would like to post contingency and special prizes, please contact BP MotorSports at 760-373-2198 or e-mail: lou@bpmotorsports.net or bpmotorsports@earthlink.net.

The California City City Council unanimously approved the "Almost Totally GPS Desert Enduro & FunRun" at tonight's Council meeting. It looked like it would be a cinch as the majority of people in attendance were supportive of the event. The City's Police Chief will coordinate the route with BP MotorSports and the Council voted to close certain Cal-City Streets (dirt ones), in order to facilitate and allow "green" or "red" sticker off-road vehicles to use the entire course.
BP MotorSports will be posting the official entry form on its website (http://www.bpmotorsports.net) shortly and providing additional details.
One matter the City asked of BP MotorSports is to make sure all participants in the Enduro & Fun Run keep the desert clean and take all trash with them out. "Not a problem," said event organizers.

The event is shaping up to be a real fun and big event for the community, with many local officials and citizens wanting to take part in it. According to event organizer, Lou Peralta, "The folks out here are very excited because since it's not a race but an enduro, they can finally take part in something off-road with their regular 4-WD pickups and SUV s.

BPMS will start laying out the route with certain City officials to make sure everything is approved.

California City has the largest, city-owned desert in all of California with 250 square miles of open desert. Although it's open, there are thousands of privately owned lots in the desert, so the route will be laid out on what used to be proposed city street. Today they are mostly off-road trails used by many weekend enthusiasts. In any given weekend, there are from 1000 to 5000 motorhomes spread over the 250 square miles. With this event, the City and the promoters are hoping to educate many off-roaders to stay away from private property and use the number of City-owned parks in the desert. The finish of the event will be at the newly refurbished Borax Bill Park, near Galileo Hill.

The course is 50 miles. Starts at 135th street just three miles outside of California City, and ends at Borax Bill park. Both start and finish are off the paved 20 Mule Team Road. 99.99% of the course is dirt trails and roads, with only a couple of spots of old pavement. Average speeds will be listed on the map which should be posted shortly on our webpage: http://www.bpmotorsports.net. Speeds range from 5 m.p.h. to 30 m.p.h. and quite a few variables in between. Remember, this IS NOT A RACE but a skill event to navigate either with a GPS (in the GPS Classes) or by the route book provided to Non-GPS entries.
