Tire prices going up.

Yikes. I was casually perusing online tire prices this morning, and I was shocked at how much tires have gone up since we bought six tires for our truck a year ago.

33s are over $300, 35s are almost $400, and 37s are about $500, just for DOT tires.

Make sure to buy your tire sponsor a bottle of Laphroaig 25 for Christmas- that's a relationship you're going to want to take care of.

Just get the off brand ones at Discount Tire and then stencil whatever name you want on them....

But yeah, tire prices have gone crazy quickly.

Look at metric sized equivalents when possible. I wanted 35"s for my truck, was told that 315's were super close size, and they were about 15% less in price

So I bought six tires a year ago, expecting to use them in Baja last November.

And since six tires last 50% longer than four tires, I thought we were in a good position.

But it took over a year to get our Kings, which pushed Baja back to this November.

...and then we had a family member that had a transportation issue, which doubled the mileage we're putting on this vehicle. We've now got about 25K on these six tires, which is the equivalent of about 16K miles on four tires.

The transportation issue has finally been resolved, so we're not gonna be piling on the miles at the same rate between now and November. We estimate we'll be at about 30K miles when we arrive in Ensenada, which would be the equivalent of about 20K miles on four tires. We will still have enough tire left for Baja, but we basically did two years of driving in one year, so we're gonna be looking at six new tires a year earlier than we had been planning, and it looks like the prices will not be advantageous.

I have 5 BFG All Terrain TA 285/70 R17 plus 1 Goodyear Wrangler 225/75 R17, all used but good. $250 for all of them. A STEAL.

And unfortunately, it seems like none of our vehicles have needed tires that are cheap. After 20K miles of commuting, the 20" rear tires on my new Porsche convertible were down to the cords and cost over a grand to replace. My wife's custom-ordered European Delivery BMW Track Pack car needs a new set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports once every few years. The tires for my MV Agusta are $600 a pair and last between one track day and 1,500 miles of adult street riding. And Heaven forbid I have to replace any of the six 53" tall Michelin 16.00R20 tubeless radials on our ex-USMC special forces MARSOC Raiders armored gun truck MTVR (now converted into a motorhome) at $3K a pop.

They're all legit U.S. spec vehicles. The MTVR IS an American-made vehicle.

Many European manufacturers have European Delivery programs, where you can custom-order a new U.S.-spec vehicle, and take delivery at the factory in Europe. They come with European registration, license plates, and insurance.

It can make an extended European vacation less expensive, because you're driving your own car instead of paying for a rental car. A number of manufacturers offer a discount- in the case of her BMW, the discount was enough to pay for our airline tickets to fly there for her to take delivery. They picked us up at the airport in a limo. And they shipped her car back home at no additional cost. Then she got to take delivery of her vehicle a second time at the dealer once it arrived. And now it's a cool souvenir of an epic bucket list trip.

While in Europe, we've toured Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Pagani, Ducati, MV Agusta, Porsche, and BMW, and only bought new vehicles from the last three.

There are KILLER deals on Craigslist..just have to be patient for them to pop up

I got a set of 5 Yokohama 32.5" (17" rims) Geolandar w/TPMS for..$70!!. 80% tread, great condition (only 3 yrs old). The seller just upgraded his Jeep, & unloaded them

There are Raptor buyers who UNLOAD their BFG 315's, sometimes for good price. I found a guy who dumped his NEW set of 315's -- $600 !! Got snapped up pretty quick.

On Craigslist ("wheels and tires"), do a search for "315"

I found a set of 4 35" Nitto Grapplers (with BFG 35") on nice alloy rims -- $80! Tires were beyond the 5 yr old "safe zone". OK for offroading, but questionable for hwy use (could blow up on me, ask me how I know..). I use the BFG as a spare

I found a set of 5 BFG 35" KO tires on Weld alloy wheels (!!) for $200. Tires were beyond 5yr age"safe zone", there were *cracks* (it's a BFG problem, the owner had them INSIDE stored!). The owner was a cool guy, good seller (took care of his stuff). Had to drive a LONG way for pickup (west of Bakersfield). On the way back, my Jeep alternator seized (bearings toast). Luckily, I was near an exit (Castaic) & pulled off immediately..to avoid any overheating. Pulled into gas station pronto!! I had to get towed back home

The 35" 315/70R17 load range "C" KO2s that come stock on the Raptor, would actually be the next step up for us, if I could figure out some kind of cut-out fender flares. I would only need about another inch of height in the front fender openings, and the rear may clear them as-is.

The only other thing I'd need, would be a deeper ring & pinion set for the rear diff. Something around 4.25:1 would be good.

But all the Raptor take-offs I see, are being sold with wheels and/or are used to the point that I'd have no use for them. And the asking prices are ridiculous.

Thanks, but those are for a 5-ton. The MTVR is MUCH larger than a 5-ton. The tires for an MTVR weigh TWICE as much as the tires for a 5-ton. The MTVR can carry 15 tons. You could load down a 5-ton truck with 5 tons of cargo, put the loaded 5-ton truck in the bed of an MTVR, and the MTVR still wouldn't be over it's GVWR. When we're on the freeway or parked in a truck stop, we look DOWN into 18-wheel tractor-trailer rigs.
