If you click on the picture to expand it, it will show you the size difference between the MTVR and the 5-ton:

What kind of mileage do you get on the open road ?
The MTVR gets about 4.5 mpg at it's electronically-restricted top speed of 62 mph. It's got an 80-gallon tank, so we fill up about every 300 miles.

The MTVR is powered by a 12-liter (732 cubic inch) intercooled CAT turbodiesel restricted to 425 horsepower and 1,550 pounds of torque.

By comparison, the 5-tons have 240 horsepower, less than half the torque, and can't even do 50 mph on level ground.

The rest of the MTVR is way more modern too. Instead of leaf springs and straight axles (like on the 5-ton), the MTVR has long-travel (16") coil-sprung fully-independent suspension with a rear sway bar. The MTVR has ABS, traction control, 5 selectable drivetrain lockers, full-time torque-biasing all wheel drive, double-beadlocked tubeless Michelin radial tires (with runflat inserts on armored vehicles like ours), dual CTIS to air the front and rear tires up and down independently of each other on the fly, adjustable air-ride seat, insulated hard cab, air conditioning on the 2007 and newer models like ours, power steering, driver-programmable Allison heavy-duty 7-speed wide-ratio double overdrive automatic transmission, and on, and on, and on. They are light-years ahead of the older/smaller trucks.

Our 2007 MTVR was $250K new. It went to auction with only about 3,000 miles on it, and we sniped it for $15K. It wasn't at all like buying an old beat up broke down worn-out truck- ours never deployed, and was nearly perfect when we got it- I just had to replace a couple of exterior light bulbs. The tires are still at about 90%.

"While in Europe, we've toured Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Pagani, Ducati, MV Agusta, Porsche, and BMW, and only bought new vehicles from the last three." And you didn't post a single food pic from there? This is Race Dessert, after all.

Thanks, but those are for a 5-ton. The MTVR is MUCH larger than a 5-ton. The tires for an MTVR weigh TWICE as much as the tires for a 5-ton. The MTVR can carry 15 tons. You could load down a 5-ton truck with 5 tons of cargo, put the loaded 5-ton truck in the bed of an MTVR, and the MTVR still wouldn't be over it's GVWR. When we're on the freeway or parked in a truck stop, we look DOWN into 18-wheel tractor-trailer rigs.

Lawrence Racing (TT Spec & other class) bought used military supply vehicle (military auction I assume), used for their 2019 NORRA 1000 support. Pretty interesting, I got pics/video. Will post later.

My take -- TOO HEAVY & bulky!

Just stick with typical support vehicle. Bought USED at a good price, hopefully low miles/use (possibly fixer/upper), from a motivated seller

It sounds just like a "toy"..seriously, how much do you use it?? Eventually, you realize it takes up space (with initial $$ tied into purchase). Then you want to sell it, but there's NO market for it! You end up DUMPING IT for super cheap, bad deal. YOU GOT TOO MANY TOYS!! Your Baja pre-run project (NEW Toyota Tacoma..built up) should have been a *used* purchase (bargain price) from a good owner (who took care of it):

nicely built (w/testing)

Built up cars NEVER get the full-value, so buyer's get a bargain.

NOTE:
A new shiny bling truck will attract ATTENTION down in Baja, becoming a target for thieves. Look at the 2021 Baja 1K HIJACKING of that trailer w/UTV. Newbie racers (from another country) NOT aware of the Baja crime. You are literally "setting yourself up" for a REALLY BAD experience down in Baja!!

These people (marijuana fields around Valle De Trinidad)

"Oh, the marijuana fields! [ laughing ]"
-- local in Valle de Trinidad

are LIKELY are reading RDC, & put your vehicle on their "target list". I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND not going down there with that thing..esp alone. In a group, better. Some Ford Superduty (the fave of Baja drug operations) got STOLEN (broad daylight) in Ensenada on the main drag (in front of Riviera Center). Martin Christensen's (All German Motorsports, then racing Class 1) support vehicle got STOLEN next to San Nicholas (SCORE headquarters) at 2006 Baja 1000 -- helmets, suits...GONE! He had to buy replacements, started REAL LATE in the race! I STILL remember his vehicle going by at Ojos at dusk

I forgot to mention the flight to Paris. After explaining to the stewardess that I was a cop, that I had an extremely hard time sleeping on planes, that I had just gotten off work from two 17-hour double shifts back-to-back on no sleep, and that we were spending the next 18 hours on airplanes, she started bringing me booze, for free, and she kept bringing it, and bringing it, and bringing it:

Damn. Up here in the Hi Dez, the biggest culinary "scene" is half price off for felons day, at the Krispy Kreme 😠. You can get stale food and fresh meth in the same parking lot.

In Rome, we stayed in Municipio 1, near the Trevi Fountain. Our first stop was a cool wine bar right around the corner from our hotel. All the best food and wine in Italy was cool little places like this:

My post on dinner in the Eiffel Tower, responding to Tom's question, was deleted. Did I do something wrong?

The topic is "Tire prices going up".You can start a new post in the Whatever section.
10-4.

I didn't see the harm in jacking my own thread to answer Tom's question, but your sandbox, your rules. You can delete the other OT posts if you'd like.

Dude, you're not kidding regarding tires it's ridiculous.
Last November I spent $600 "installed" for 5 245/75/16 Goodyear Authority Wranglers, for my GF.
Went to buy a set for myself last week $850 now.😟
Screenshot_20220619-080901-954.png

They are the absolute best deal in my price range, nothing remotely comes close. What I like about em is
#1 They're a brand name,
#2 By far the most aggressive tread of any all-terrain tire.
#3 40k-50k treadlife,
#4 I can pick them up at any store anywhere in the country.
#5 Goodyear is a American company. Who knows where the tires are made but at least the parent company is USA.
I wanted BFG Mud Terrains, but 5 w install is $1500.00+ that basically double what the Goodyear's go for.😳
I know there not as hard core, but for my purpose there more than durable enough. And even if I destroy one, hell even two tires, I'd still come out cheaper than BFGs by replacing it with a spare.
I was hoping to put 37" in on my diesel van, 2 years ago the prices seemed reasonable@ Jan 2022 prices , I decided well.. I now better put 35s 🤨 so here we are almost July & that's getting ridiculous.
I even looked at Treadrights remolded M/T tires. There (NO deal at all) they're only $20 cheaper than brand new tires...
I may just go with 33 inch Goodyear Wranglers on that too 🥱 I really wanted 35s but since it 2WD, & even with a locker, realistically ya can't go off road for s***. 😆That's probably what I'm going to do.
It's a Diesel so I don't really "need" to re-gear on anything. 37s might have been a bridge too far...if I was a lead foot
But the diesel van is just a point A to B rig, if I was to put BFGs on the van that's 6 tires that's $2,000.00...
And @ 1 set of tires a year with mileage!
" Screw that! "
I'm liking the 5 Wrangler Authoritys 33" @ $1100.00 six ways to next Sunday 😀😀

Whoever thought, that in 2022 on a daily driver ..that you'd have to pay out $2000.00 - $4000.00 a year JUST FOR TIRES tires... seriously; 🧐Things are Waaaay outta whack.

FYI- Like the Europe pics👍Awesome .wish I was there

Maybe the price of things is not actually going up.... but instead the value of the exchange of value is going down.

Always two+ ways to see anything.

View attachment 246612When I bought my 40’s a year ago I paid $600 a peice, now I’ve hear $900 -$1000
That just nuts!🤣😳
I bought my E350 7.3 Diesel
New Rims
Camberg lift kit
+ Limited slip rear diff

ALL FOR LESS THAN JUST A SET OF 5-6 OF THOSE TIRES WOULD COST😳😱

Tires😳...just for tires.😳

Jeeeeezuz...If you buy tires just 1x a year for 10 years...that's $50,000....

I can't fathom that...that's a down payment on a house ..lol😱

My budget..at or under 80 k yr...no way I could do that.

The Times..they are a Changing.
Not for the better either.

Pretty soon you're going to see people getting shot & carjacked for their tires... seriously....🙄😧

My buddy spent a couple years in Brazil, he said gas stations and red lights in traffic are the most dangerous places you can’t avoid .
