Tried to cross at Tecate this afternoon with 2 quads and about 10 spare wheels and tires. Was told I could only take 1 spare with each quad, and if I wanted to pay import duty and bring them in I would have to come back Monday when the right official was there. I was escorted to the front of the return line to cross back , though they wouldn't let my friend John in his truck go with us. He had to find his way to Ensenada alone (having never been to Mexico before) while I went to San Ysidro where the inspector checked the registrations and let me through with no mention of the spares.
Both the first inspector at Tecate and the supervisor she called over were courteous and sympathetic to my plight, but they were going to enforce the rules. I have a feeling that young inspector was new and going by the book, and once she called over the supervisor, he didn't feel he could let it slide. Oh well, that's Baja, just took me a little longer to get here…..
