Hey I'm really quite unfamiliar with VW engines, but are they all air cooled?

Like the ones in Class 10, Class 5, and Class5-1600?

Thanks!

Well not all VW engines are aircooled but those most commonly used in desert racing are, meaning type 1 and type 4 engines. However there are a few other liquid cooled straight and flat 4s rarely/sometimes used that don't fit into that category.

Thanks guys. . .

. . .without asking for a super in-depth discussion to tell me stuff I can find by reading what's the difference between Type I and Type 4? and which would be preferred for desert racing?

Thanks again!

Type 1 and type 4 motors are very similar in configuration/design but do not share parts (expcept a few), to summarize the difference:

Type 1: used in class 1-2/1600, 5/1600, 12, and 10(sometimes)
-smaller, lighter, cheaper, etc.

Type 4: used in class 5, and 10
-bigger displacement, heavier, more durable commponents, more torque, more $$$

Which one is better for desert racing?
-Class rules generally dictate your options but given the choice (like in class 5 and 10) between T1 and T4 most go with the T4...

Hope this helps!:)

class 10 are generally water cooled motors (destroked GTI motors, etc.) but you can run air cooled.

from what I understand you can run a type 4 in a 12 car it just has to have the certain displacement.
