I still have the team Kia T-shirt from that year - it says "Paris to La Paz." The Kias had just competed in the Paris to Dakar race, then turned around and raced in the 1000. As I recall, both Kias had to have their transmissions swapped out mid-race.

There were three. Winner had no real problems, Cooks broke the front R&P and were stuck and the other may have had a trans problem - hard to remember that long ago.

Super awesome run at the NZ1000, first run in an off roader with maximum seat time, completed 14 laps and 750 odd km, missed going out on another lap by 40sec. Finished 32nd.

Qualified 76th after a spin and no grip on desert tyres. Had to be pushed off the line by a 4wheeler! Crew Ron Christmas re grooved thanks to Jonno climo tyre groover. Totally different feel afterwards. Only had a few minor problems but still managed to drive it back on the trailer.

I have one of the Class 3 / Dakar Kia's freshly fully prepped and with a mountain of factory spares. Perfect for NORRA with 4wd, it's kind of a hybrid desert racer/rally raid car.
Dry sump fuel injected V6, 5 speed Richmond, 40 spline floater on 4-link, etc. It needs a wrap and a new owner as I'm trying my best to quit desert racing. Built by Curt LeDuc.
I was going to race it in the 2021 1000 along with the bronco as a 2-truck Class 3 team but pulled the plug on racing. Bronco sold to a friend and now I have the Kia to look at in my San Felipe shop and remind my of my racing addiction. It is a cool car. BTW, it's got a license plate so maybe I'll use it as a prerunner since it seems my Speed UTV is never going to arrive.
