Re: What is the craziest off road experience you have ever had?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I struggle up a sand hill, motor revving, tires spinning, temp gauge climbing. I'm trying to find the finish line. I've been in this car a long time, driving suit is sweat soaked,my feet are on fire from the hot floor. The steering wheel is heavy and the blisters on my hands make me glad I have gloves. Having built this car in two and half weeks I know every part and what I have put it through to get to this place. My head is ready to explode. As I crest the hill I can't believe my eye's,through the windshield sandblasted by endless day's in the Sahara through the haze I see one of the Seven Wonders of the World. You see the finish was at the 9 Pyramids of Giza, Egypt.

This all started on The world stage on NEW Years Eve in Paris on Y2K at the Eiffel Tower in a crowd of a million people. That little KIA never let me down.21 days 7,000 miles 8 countries So when you see me at the races with my boy's or in Baja or in pink shirt in Barstow I will have a smile on my face because I LIVED THE DREAM!

First time around the Mikes loop when I was 16 we pulled over to help a 9 car in our Stock Fool. Hooked up the tow strap and gave him a tug. Open the door and the dude gave us a go ahead wave so we took off. About 5 yards later we feel a yank and before we could say WTF to each other the front bumper of the 9 car ripped through the door missing my leg by about a foot at most. Needless to say he was a little bit more stuck to begin with but we all had a good laugh.

Re: What is the craziest off road experience you have ever had?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it was the 2000 baja 500 and i was co-driving in a 5-1600, we blew a rear wheel bearing off the start so were about 3 hours down on time. Went into guadalupe wash and driver was hell bent on making up time. We got to the mountains behind Ojos Negros and were stuck on a single track trail behind a broken class 10 car being towed by a broken class 1 car being towed by a 4 door ford chase truck. Next opening there was driver passed the 10 car and with a tow strap rubbing on the passenger side door tearing the mirror off and denting the door, next put the moves on the 1 car, and once again tow strap rubbing at the window net 10 inches away from my face. Finally the guy driving the chase truck saw us and stopped so we passed and the ride to check one was one of the best performances i have ever seen from this driver. Unfortunately we missed the check point by about an hour.

Re: What is the craziest off road experience you have ever had?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the Nevada 2000 I came into a left hand turn way too fast up in the pine mountains on my XR 650. It was lined on the outside by several pine trees that were really close together.

Feet on the pegs, I hit the berm, blew through it and literally rode at a 90 degree angle to the ground on those tree trunks, feet still on pegs! Made the turn, then dropped right back on the road like nothing happened! I went from knowing I was going to be in a world of hurt, to feeling like a hero in five seconds. Of course not a soul to see it but me and the Man upstairs. I thanked him over and over for miles after that. Then I went on to win the Ironman class and get 11th OA! Go figure!

I also once witnessed an amputee racer lose his prostetic leg in a crash at Hangtown. I looked up from the start line and before me is the horror of a racer hopping around on one leg! I did not know he was an amputee until several seconds AFTER he picked up his leg and was trying to put it back on! Craziest and most hardcore moto moment I ever saw.

In the Nevada 1000 I crashed really hard at speed. One of those that your bike is like fifty yards from you when you get up. Tore off my fanny pack and camelback. Broke visor ect. Heard myself make that awful sound.

What sucked is I found my goggles and the lens was gone! Took me twenty minutes to find it wedged in some pucker brush.

2007 SNORE Buffalo Bills 400, racing the original 1189 and broke down in the middle of the course about 40 miles in on an 80 mile loop. We radioed into the main pit after the starter went out and they said they were going to strap one to the 989 being wheeled by my nephew Corey Torres (who was leading class 9) and to have wire cutters and a nut driver ready. When the 989 pulls up, me and 100lb Nate Himmelrick get to work getting the starter off the cage when I hear the beep of the horn. I look up and Corey is holding up a sandwich with a big smile. Nate and I split the sandwich (made by my sister), install the starter and were on our way until we blew up 5 miles later. Best sandwich ever, you had to be there!!

Funny Torres/Crowd Pleaser story:

DRUNK! Corey 989 swipes a neighbors yard troll: This thing goes everywhere for mos with pics-notes getting dropped in the owners mailbox RE his adventures. The Mint Casinos, B1K Pics with Sal, Mark Post/Robbie, he was even on TV with the skier/mohawk dude. This goes on for a few mos. At a MORE race and C.P. is riding shotgun with me and about 2 AM we pass out and leave "John Gnome" in a chair watching the coals in the fire. We wake up race AM and the chair is tipped into the fire pit and there sits John Gnome. Ed goes to pick him up and he disenigrates to dust... We race and take 2nd or third in 16 and are BS'n at the finish with friends/comp and beer when Crowd Pleaser calls out: "Jeff how do you spell Gnome?" Not looking I answer, we drink more and keep talking, no worries... 3 weeks later I get a call asking if my Dusty Times came in: "You gotta see this!". I get home open it up to read that: Ed & I dedicated the race to our fallen friend who died in a tragic fire in the pits the night before the race but we soldiered on etc... RIP "John Gnome" was on 6-10 cars the rest of that MORE season; a very fitting tribute!

Not so much crazy but rather lucky. 2001 or 2002 MDR race in lucerne may have been a kartec 425 its a bit fuzzy. Anyway we were running an 8 truck at the time Los Amigos team, we had been having throttle cable issues all day (sticking) other than that flawless day. Last lap we have the #1 spot in the bag as we come across the finish line Eric gives it one last blip of the throttle and the cable broke. All we could do is sit there and laugh with the flag man staring at us like we were a couple of retards as we radio to main pit to bring a tow rope. We ended up with a championship that year good times!

I couldn't have told that story better myself Jeff. You left out that I had to pi$$ right from the start and was hoping we'd break or that right off the line you say "f$#k, the throttle is sticking" I say "are we gonna stop" you say "F$#K NO"...............Good times RIP John Gnome

It's truly disappointing that this was the only photo of this joyous event. No documentation of how they destroyed the rest of the room and jakes clothes and bed. Lol.....or perhaps a video of farmer rangling and bringing the pissed off sheep into submission. Lol. I blame you for this fact.

I was originally going to post " Sharing a room with Helton" but I thought the picture of a sheep in light bondage was less incriminating....

Cholistan 2013 : The Leaf Sprung Suzuki Jimny 401 Story...

Cholistan Desert Rally, Feb 2013, 50 kms into the race an oldish black Suzuki Jimny caught up with us at great pace. The Jimny did not have much of an issue finding his way around us, and we followed him for a bit but lost him soon after. About five mins later, as we approached a big right turn on top of a dune, we saw that the Jimny was resting on the outer bank of the turn at a 45 degree angle - semi rollover. Its two right wheels off the ground and two people were frantically pushing it back upright. As we overtook them they seem to have managed to get all wheels on ground and hurriedly were getting back into the car. A couple of turns later as we took a Left 120 turn at the base of a dune leading onto a Check Point (CP) and straightish track afterwards, we saw to our left that the Jimny was again behind us and was making his way down the dune. The external rollcage seemed to have kept the car intact.

Now, at the CP all racecars need to have their race-card stamped to show proof of track completion at the finish. After having our card stamped, I floored our FJ40 for a full V8 launch thinking that we should have some fun with the Jimny on the straight track. Then I somehow recalled the gusto and spirit with which the two guys were pushing the Jimny back up and getting back in, I thought that God knows what these guys are upto and maybe they were competitive in their category. So the racer gave in to the gentleman, and I pulled the car completely off the track, stopped and waited for the Jimny to pass. Pass it did and I remember the next few seconds in slow motion when one hand emerged from the right window of the car (driver's side around here) waving us a thank you and another hand other from the left window doing the same (Navigator's side). At this point I saw a piece of paper fly past the left of our FJ and I remember saying to myself that "no, that didn't actually happen, it can't be that!". Lo and behold, the next instant we see the Jimny takes a 90 degree turn off the track as the guys turn around and start looking for their race-card. Yes, in thanking us for giving them way the navigator had dropped the freshly stamped timing card from his hand! One can only imagine the intensity of the kind words of appreciation emanating from the driver's mouth here....

Yes, it does seem that they found their timing card and as we hit the Khabar track soon afterwards, they came in for a third overtake of the FJ and this time no thank you hands were visible. At the finish, these guys stacked up 4th in category missing podium by 43 seconds to newer/better equipped coil sprung cars! Pic of the 401 car during qualification run and the results for the very competitive D category. These cars run modified bigger displacement engines and local drivers with tremendous experience of desert driving and terrain normally dominate this category despite very limited wheel travel and the SWB cars being notoriously difficult and very rollover friendly. Our race prepped FJ40 in comparison, could perhaps use some of those driving skills!

first time we finished a score race in baja was pretty crazy..first time we won our class in baja was insane by comparison..too much and too many crazy little things along the way to even begin to mention though for sure and i wouldn't have it any other way. this sport is a breeding ground for weird chit to happen and something weird will happen every single race..it seems inevitable..

Re: What is the craziest off road experience you have ever had?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was racing in the early '80s ADRA and they had a Young AZ race and had a beautiful setting in a field just below a landing strip at the base of a bunch of hills/Mountains....1/2 way around one of the laps in my1600 car I had a horse jump out in front of me at I just went through a small stream.........knowing that my car and the horse were not an even match for speed or weight (the horse was faster) it got directly in my path going down the course. I thought that it would bolt up into the forest out of harms way but it continued down the course looking back at me with wide eyes and running like a greyhound dog (rear legs planting in front of the front legs) I chased it for about 300 yards until if took off up a hill scared to death I'm sure! I hope he/she survived the chase but I'm sure he/she had never been chased by anything that big before!!
