I searched for an answer but could not find one in earlier posts. I want to run coilovers on some custom beams, i was told that 10" shocks would be good because you dont have to move anything in the engine compartment and still get good travel. is this true? or is it worth moving the battery and resevoirs to fit a 12" or 14" in? and what kind of travel will a 10", 12" and 14" shock get with stock steering? I have the 2.3L motor. thanks

You can use a 12" king or Fox or a 14" Sway-A-Way. We set up the trucks with 16" front travel. This all they get with the stock steering. You can get more but parts will wear out much faster. so both 12 and 14" shocks will work great for your application.

Why different travel lenghts for the different shocks. Is one longer compressed than the other.

The shock bodies are different lengths for different shock companies.

Its also the caps on some shocks are longer then others. I know the king cap goes in two inches into the shock, the sway away is shorter so you can get away with a shorter shock.
