Rage Gets Roberts Racing A Few More Laps In 2015
Roberts Racing was not content to let the 2015 race season end. Only days after the final Best In The Desert series race in Henderson, Nevada, they dusted the truck off and headed to the SNORE series finale, Rage At The River, in Laughlin, Nevada. The SNORE Laughlin course is a favorite of racers. Only 12 miles long, it combines a twisty man-made infield section with natural desert terrain.
The heat-race format begins with qualifying on Friday, then racing on Saturday and Sunday. It was a surprise to no one when Dale Dondel took the Go-PartsRacing.com, Toyo Tires, Specialized Automation Services, Racer Engineering, MOMO, King Shocks, KC HiLites, Howe Power Steering and F&L Racing Fuel trick truck to the number one qualifying position on Friday.
The unlimited cars and trucks started each heat race two at a time. Dale would start next to the second fastest truck of Brandon Arthur.
At the drop of the flag, Dale grabbed the hole shot from Arthur, leading into the section of course called the “Moon Bumps.” Either it’s because it resembles the surface of the moon or they got their name because the big holes and choppy whoops send the cars and trucks straight to the moon.
According to co-driver Brian Busby, they were about half way to the moon when they realized a loss of forward drive. The huge shock loads they were taking from hitting the moon bumps at full throttle had snapped the input shaft on the transmission. Their race came to an unfortunate end. The crew had a debate on whether or not to replace the transmission overnight and race on Sunday. When faced with the decision to race or not race, the answer with this team is simple, they race!
For Sunday’s race, Dale would start in the back, but the challenge of working through the pack would make it more fun. With only five laps in the heat, the pace was wide open. As the laps went by, they picked off many cars and trucks.
While overtaking a slower vehicle, they got tangled up. The impact ripped the front fiberglass off and damaged the shock reservoir. They continued for a ways but eventually the reservoir let go. Continuing would have been difficult with no nitrogen pressure in the shock and might have done damage to the exotic and expensive King shocks. They parked the truck for good.
Unless they find another race in the next two weeks, the 2015 season truly was in the books. While the Roberts Racing team was sad to see this season end, they are extremely excited about what’s coming in 2016. Their first race will most likely be the Best In The Desert, Parker 425 in Parker, Arizona February 4-7.
