The 47th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 will be known as one of the toughest ever. Not only did the course travel a staggering 1,275 miles, it was made much more difficult after hurricane Odile slammed the Baja Peninsula in September. During the hurricane, washes ran wild across the landscape depositing debris everywhere. Countless rocks were unearthed on a course that already included miles of punishing square edged whoops and deep silt beds.

The conditions pounded many into submission but not the Alumi Craft team of Mike Johnson, Mike Majesky and Brent Fletcher. They crushed the class 10 field winning by an hour over second place. Mike Majesky started the car and handed it off to Brent Fletcher at mile 415. Brent drove through the night handing the car to Mike Johnson at 5 am.

“The top end of the course was flawless for us,” said Mike Johnson, “We changed a wheel in the pits that did not seat. It came off but it was in a sandy area; the car just laid down, it didn’t do any damage. After that we took some extra time in the pits just to make sure everything was right. There was water everywhere; I was soaking wet most of the race. I got a pair of flats going through a water crossing so I had to drive 20 miles on a flat. That cost us some time but we kept pushing. We built a lead that was 9 miles, then 45; soon we had an hour lead in hand. The course was relentless; miles of silt and whoops that pounded the car. Our Alumi Craft handled it all and our FOX shocks worked perfectly.”

Also finishing in the top ten their first time out was the Alumi Craft team from Indiana of John Rhymer, Brian Topping, Matt Rowell and Jeremy Laufer. They spent 36 hours on the course to finish 9th place out of 24 class 10 starters. “We put the guys in the car at pit 7 and thought, didn’t we already run 1000 miles?” says John Rhymer, “People told us that we didn’t understand what we were getting ourselves into but it was the experience of a lifetime for us. Every time someone got out of the car they were jumping up and down; the car was so fast and ran so well. There was a lot of water; we lost a belt and then the alternator but not a single flat; it was really awesome! We definitely had the right car for the job.” John and his crew from Indiana will be racing the Best In The Desert series in 2015 with pit support from Alumi Craft.

The Stronghold Motorsports team of Scott Bailey, Brandon Bailey and Larry Job finished 6th in their MavTV sponsored class 1 Alumi Craft. It was the first time driving in a Baja race for Brandon. “We are very happy after finishing a very tough Baja 1000, said Brandon, “It was my first ever race in Baja and we got a top ten finish. Our Alumi Craft has been perfect. We finished every mile of every race we have entered this year.”
