Alumi Craft Racer Conner McMullen Wins BITD Laughlin Desert Classic & Class 1000 Championship
The Best In The Desert (BITD) hosted its final event of the 2019 season with two days of racing during the Method Race Wheels Laughlin Desert Classic. Alumi Craft Racer Connor McMullen took the Class 1000 win on both days against 19 other competitors scoring 3rd overall in the buggy group and 9th overall, to lock down the 2019 Championship. Other notable finishers were Nick Carolan, who raced the #6206 Spec Engine Unlimited Open Wheel Alumi Craft with a weekend sweep. In Class 1500, Scott Rasmussen captured a 4th place finish and 3rd place podium to rank the #1510 Alumi Craft 3rd overall in Class.
The BITD 2019 points championship was hotly contested in the Class 1000 division. Conner McMullen was leading the charge in the #1020 Alumi Craft Race Car with a 1 point lead over fellow Alumi Craft Racer; Christian Fessler and 6 points over Peter Hajas in 3rd.
Conner explained his winning strategy, “I was starting in fourth behind the two other racers vying for the championship. We had a game plan of running 80% for the first couple of laps. I made up about 15 seconds on the lead cars by the first lap, so we just kept that pace going until the third lap. I passed the lead car and just kept an easy, steady pace to the end.” Our Alumi Craft Race Car ran flawless all season and it’s great to have a car you can rely on every race to get you to the finish!”
That quick run placed Conner and the #1020 GetTheTea.com Alumi Craft 4th overall in the group against Class 1500 and 1st place in Class 1000. It would give McMullen a second-row start right next to CJ Hutchins in a 1500 Unlimited Car. “My game plan for Sunday was to keep CJ in my sites all day long, and I knew I would have the win and the points championship as well,” shared Conner. “That is exactly what we were able to execute. CJ pulled away about 20 seconds ahead, but I had him in sight all day long. Finishing the weekend 3rd overall for our group and 1st in Class 1000, it was a huge accomplishment for the team and me.”
The Laughlin Desert Classic gets its namesake due to the tremendous challenge of competition split over two days. Each race is a wide-open sprint with four laps around a 16-mile loop. Any race in Laughlin is known to be very fast, very hard on equipment and very rough terrain. With this challenging format to contest, racers are often faced with mechanical equipment failures. On the other hand, if you get two excellent finishes, a consistent performance puts you at the top of the overall results.
Scott Rasmussen proved this in his #1510 Alumi Craft with a Top 5 on Saturday, and a 3rd place finish on Sunday. Combined Rasmussen was able to work his way to 3rd overall in Class.
Nick Carolan, in the #6206 Alumi Craft Buggy, did one better, sweeping both races for back-to-back victories winning the Spec Engine Unlimited Open Wheel Division. “I love that I can push our Alumi Craft race car through the worst terrain imaginable and not have to worry about what the desert will do to it,” mentioned Nick Carolan.
For racers like Conner McMullen, Nick Carolan and Scott Rasmussen; they entrust the Alumi Craft platform to be a top performer and reliable in the most grueling conditions.
