Alumi Craft’s New 6100 Truck Gets Win And Overall Podium Finish In Racing Debut
Racing in Laughlin, Nevada has always been a unique challenge. Part short course, part desert, it takes a well-rounded vehicle to be successful there. The frantic pace and punishing terrain packs a one-two punch. It’s no accident that Alumi Craft Race Cars chose the Best In The Desert, Laughlin Desert Classic (LDC) to debut their new 6100 class truck. The Desert Classic is a two-day heat race style event. Racers had four laps on Saturday and four more on Sunday. Finishing positions on day one determine starting positions on day two and both days are combined to determine overall finishing position. Truck owner John Rhymer would drive on Saturday and Alumi Craft’s Geoffrey Cooley would take the helm on Sunday.
“We started 13th and were stuck in traffic,” said John Rhymer, “I passed one truck in the whooped out section. I was being polite and trying to take it easy on the new truck; it was my first time driving it. We were trying to get around another truck and on the horn when we were caught from behind. The truck behind nurfed us and pushed us wide in a corner. After that I got more aggressive and worked my way up to 8th place at the finish.
The FOX shocks and suspension in the rough were amazing. There were two rogue bumps in the FOX Proving Grounds that were taller and not timed to the others. We thought we would have to back off for them but when we passed that other truck, we hit them wide open. The truck soaked them up like they were nothing. I knew the truck would be different than my Alumi Craft class 10 car but it’s drastically different. I have some work to do, the truck is better than me. We are Indiana guys. We don’t know all the tricks yet but we’re learning.”
On Sunday, Geoffrey Cooley started 8th and quickly went to work. Geoffrey worked closely with John Marking of FOX to do all the initial testing and tuning on the Alumi Craft truck; he knows its capabilities.
Geoffrey had only one thing on his mind; taking the win. Every other truck in his class was just part of the course that had to be vanquished. He drove straight to victory; winning by one minute and 24 seconds. The total time for his 4 laps was 01:10:50.560; the fastest time in the 6100 class during the two days of racing. His win on Sunday propelled the team to a 3rd place finish overall.
Rhymer and Cooley were not the only Alumi Craft racers who had great results at the Desert Classic. 16 year old Mason Cullen dominated in his single seat class 2000 limited buggy. The LDC was perfectly suited to Cullen who is the current points leader in the Lucas Oil Short Course Regional Series, limited buggy class. Cullen got to Laughlin late; he had a test to take in school on Friday. Education is a top priority for Cullen. Despite not even seeing the course until lap one on Saturday, he schooled the field running the fastest time of the weekend on his way to victory.
He backed that up with another win on Sunday taking the overall victory. He was joined on the podium by fellow Alumi Craft racer Nathan Martino who was third overall.
In class 10, Alumi Craft racer Jared Teague finished second on Saturday and got faster on Sunday taking the win. His strong performance gave him the overall race victory. He clicked off consistent 1 hour and 12 minute times on both days. His total time for both days was nearly ten minutes faster than the second place overall class 10 finisher. “The Alumi Craft held up well like usual,” said Teague, “We had no issues at all. It was a fun course, really fast. Our win on Saturday set us up for another good finish on Sunday.”
