A new year that began with a nasty surprise, then continued with a fair amount of dust and rage, that thankfully ended with another victory…
It was an interesting fourth day for Jean Louis Schlesser and Cyril Esquirol to start 2013. At the briefing the day before, the start time for the crew of the Sonangol buggy was pushed back a quarter of an hour by mistake. The stunning blue buggy was set to leave first having won the Special the day before, but when it arrived on the start line, six cars and the Kamaz lorry of the Russian Shibalov had already left the camp. There was no penalty as there was no fault on the part of the crew, but they had seven big rivals to overtake in horrendous dust…

Also, at the front, their opponents had a clear track…

Jean Louis Schlesser explained… “there was a lot of dust and no wind, I had to work for sixty km to be able to get past Zapletal! I was struggling in the clouds of dust but suddenly the wind got up and swept it away, which allowed me to easily pass the Russian lorry. What’s more, the stage was very difficult. To give you an idea, we travelled a hundred less km than yesterday but it took as much time! There were places of trial sections that were also very narrow. We were driving at only 20km/h in places. Thank goodness that my navigator Cyril Esquirol was on form as usual. Not one mistake. We ended up with the win but only by very little! It was a complicated day that ended well.”

Jean Louis pushed all day long to recover the lost time to overtake the other vehicles. He managed to win the Special and extended his advance in the general classification by just three minutes. A true show of force, driving excellence and navigation prowess.

Tomorrow, the last Special in Morocco will end in Dakhla by the Atlantic Ocean in the magnificent city named Villa Cisneros by Saint Exupery.
