Sunday April 28th the green flag will wave for the 2019 Yokohama NORRA Mexican 1000 presented by Method Race Wheels and the Caballo Del Diablo team will be there as they have every year since the historic race was resurrected back in 2009.
With their sights set on conquering this year’s 1400 mile course from Ensenada to San Jose Del Cabo the team and their Yokohama 1968 Ford Bronco will face a field filled with competition. The now familiar mariachi theme will continue in 2019 with an all black truck livery while drivers Boyd Jaynes and Brian Godfrey will be sporting hand painted helmets by master motorsport artist Troy Lee to commemorate the ten year anniversary. “Nothing beats driving a cool ass vintage Ford Bronco through a cactus lined trail in Baja with a big mustache covered in dust, we look forward to that feeling fifty one weeks a year.” says Jaynes
Aesthetics aside this year has been all about performance updates to the Bronco.
Having the best record of any team at NORRA with six class wins doesn’t mean anyone has been laying around in the off-season. After nearly ten thousand race miles it was finally time to retire the old 351 Cleveland V8 under the hood and replace it with something more reliable. The new Ford Performance 347 Stroker produces 370 hp in a light weight, low compression package to run on Mexican pump gas. The combined increase in power and loss of weight has given the advanced age SUV a new spring in her step, literally. Testing with the now lighter front end required a new set of Deaver coil springs as well as re-valving the FOX Factory shocks to match. Stepping out of the truck the first time after driving with the upgrades everyone present agreed the new engine sounded like demons screaming out of the Duff headers.
While the route of the Mexican 1000 will take the racers well outside the reach of urban communication devices, live tracking will be available at NORRA.com with additional daily coverage of the team being produced from The Dirt by 4WP and found on @CaballoDelDiablo and partners social media channels.
