Coleman Motorsports had a simple strategy for winning the SNORE class 1600 championship; take a great car and drive it as fast as possible. It sounds simple but it’s not. Every task, every nut and bolt that gets tightened; every pit stop and every decision made along the way needs to be done to perfection. The team’s success comes from a mutual desire by every member to win and the skill and drive needed to make that happen.
The team started their season with back to back top five finishes in the SNORE series; great results for most but they wanted more. As a personal challenge, it was decided to go south of the border to race the legendary SCORE, Baja 500. It was the first race in Mexico for the team. A 500 mile race in a foreign country is no easy task for first timers. Met with low expectations by most outside the team, they were never the less undaunted. They executed their plans to perfection, winning the race. The victory confirmed what the team already knew; they were capable of winning and expected no less.
The win was followed by back-to-back victories in the SNORE series.
“The 500 win was just part of a great season for us,” said Jason Coleman, “We had three wins in eight races. Except for one dnf, we never finished lower than fourth place. I have to hand it to the team for giving me a perfect car every race and Jeremy Munyon for keeping me pumped up when I needed it and focused when I had to be.”
At the final race of the SNORE season, a two day, heat format race, the team was poised for another top finish. Despite a lack of wind that allowed thick dust to blanket the course, at the end of racing on Saturday, they had moved from the 21st starting position into the top five.
At the drop of the flag on Sunday morning Jason was picking up spots. The pace needed to stay out front in this class is so close to the ragged edge it’s inevitable that sooner or later you will find the limit of control. When passing for the lead, Jason caught a rut and turned the car over. The team’s goal of a third straight win in SNORE was not to be. They lost the battle but won the war; their points lead was too much for the rest of the field to overcome; the championship was theirs.
“This championship is for all the volunteers who spend long hours at the shop and at the races,” says Jason, “I couldn’t have done it without the support and sacrifice of my wife Holly and my parents and I know it’s the same for the families of the whole crew. It takes a lot of people to win a championship; we couldn’t have done it without all our great sponsors below.
