Taking on the Mint 400, America’s toughest, most storied off-road race, is hard enough in a purpose-built race truck. Attempting it with a near-stock Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro? That’s crazy talk.
In Episode 2 of “Dealer to Desert,” Jerry Zaiden and his team at Camburg Racing put the permitted finishing touches to their Tacoma, including additional safety features and longer-travel suspension for the Nevada desert’s gnarliest terrain.
But unless the base vehicle is man enough for the pummeling it’s about to get, any amount of optimizing isn’t going to get it done. So, any doubts from Zaiden on his choice of truck as he prepares to shake it down? Nope.
“Choosing the Tacoma TRD Pro, that puts us at an advantage over any other truck in its class,” he says. “This truck has larger axles, a larger differential, stronger spindles, beefier A-arms and a much stronger powertrain.”
