Abrams, WI (July 23, 2013) – The weekend of racing at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Illinois was a roller coaster of a ride for Don Demeny. A rare early retirement on Friday and a great performance on Saturday keeps the #885 Nsight Telservices / Cellcom / E3 Spark Plugs / Cooper Tires RAM in the lead for the 2013 TORC Super Stock Truck Championships.
The stop at Route 66 Raceway saw all the Sportsman competitors take to the track for the first time in the three year history of TORC racing at the multi-track motorsports facility. The one-mile long layout was a great mix of high speed corners, a fast infield section and high flying jumps as well as tight banked corners.
The Friday lineup had the top eight in championship points inverted, this saw Demeny occupy the outside spot in the fourth row. The thirteen trucks truck would run a twelve lap race with a midway mandatory caution. Unfortunately for the Nsight RAM, the race ended well short of the checkered flag. During the fourth lap just as Demeny was moving into the top five, the ring and pinion broke ending the day in thirteenth place.
The Demeny Racing team quickly went to work replacing the unit and was ready for Round 6 action later the same evening.
Due to the early exit in Round 5, Cooper Tire equipped #885 was starting near the tail end of the field. To have a shot at the win, Demeny would have quickly moved through traffic and avoid any on-track skirmishes. Early on the plan was working as Demeny had worked his way into fifth place by the end of the second lap. Then during the following circuit, another competitor just drove through the side of the yellow RAM truck causing it to spin. Somehow Demeny was able to continue on, but once again he was at the pack of the back.
During the mandatory caution lap, the team’s spotter, Charlie McCormick was able to calm down Demeny and focus on finishing on the podium. The voice over the radio must have worked as on the twelfth and final lap, the #885 Nsight Telservices / Cellcom / E3 Spark Plugs / Cooper Tires RAM had one final pass to finish on the podium in second place.
“Today’s race really wore me out, physically and mentally,” remarked Don Demeny. “After we got spun I was hot. I mean really upset, but Charlie calmed me down and got me racing again. To go through the field basically twice and finish second is a testament to everyone that lends a hand to this team. The sidewalls on my Cooper Tires are pretty tough, even after taking that hard hit, the tire never failed. Thanks to my crew, my sponsors, TORC, and everyone that gets us to the race track.”
After six rounds of racing, Don Demeny continues to lead the 2013 TORC Super Stock Truck Championship.
Next Race: August 10-11 @ RED BUD MX in Buchanan, Michigan.
