DSM – Rage at the River Race Report

The rain and cold weather of Laughlin, Nevada threatened to make the SNORE Rage at the River event a swampy mess but the Boshart Motorsports sponsored F150 of DSM (Dean Schlingmann Motorsports) was prepared for battle and ready for whatever Mother Nature had in store. Off the starting line in the fifth position (out of six), the driving team of Dean Schlingmann and Joe Reinbold went to work quickly hunting down their competitors.

Different than the marathon courses DSM usually takes on, Laughlin was set up as a two day sprint race where competitors speed through five 11-mile laps. After two days of competition, the cumulative times are compared to determine a winner.

Three laps into day 1, Dean came into a fast left hand turn when a power steering belt failed leaving him to control the 35″ BF Goodrich tires without help. With the fast pace of the race, Dean and Joe had no choice but to wrestle Layla (the race truck) the next 5 miles into main pit. Upon reaching the pit, the DSM crew went to work quickly (only 4 minutes) installing a new belt and the team was back out on the course chasing down the competitors who had snuck by during their down time. After passing a number of their competitors for a second time, Dean and Joe crossed the finish line on Saturday in 3rd place.

Sunday morning found the race course being pounded with rain until two hours before the class 8 competitors made their way to the starting line. Starting at the front of the pack, Dean and Joe didn’t look back as they worked their way around the 11 mile course free of any dust and slow moving vehicles. Making great time on the field, the DSM team was quickly finding themselves to be one of the few remaining teams in competition. Unfortunately, the same power steering gremlins raised their heads again on lap four at the same point on the race course. After forcing their way back into main pit and receiving a fresh belt, Dean and Joe headed out for their fifth and final lap with the only remaining class 8 competitor in their sites. With its new engine program at full tilt, the duo was in hot pursuit when Layla let out a loud groan which would prove to be a broken axle, thus ending DSM’s pursuit of the #1 position for the weekend.

The broken axle proved to be an unfortunate ending to the race season for DSM, but all agreed that Layla was moving faster than ever and the bugs are just about eliminated.
