Money and Mayhem Guaranteed at $107,200 Lucas Oil
Challenge Cup Races at Firebird Raceway
2012 Championship Finales
(October 19, 2012): Completing one of the most successful seasons in the history of short course racing, the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series is preparing for two final curtain-call performances next weekend at Chandler, Arizona’s famed Firebird International Raceway. Scheduled for October 27-28, the weekend’s packed schedule of racing in a variety of classes will be defined by two entirely different agendas – championships and money.
After the champions have been crowned, Sunday’s races will be all-out warfare to collect a piece of the massive $107,200 Lucas Oil Challenge Cup presented by MAVTV-American Real cash purse. This amount represents the largest single day cash prize award in the sport’s history, and is separate from the series championship and posted contingency awards.

On Saturday, Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series drivers and teams will compete in the 15th and final rounds of racing to determine 2012 champions in 7 of the 9 classes that make up a busy day of competition. In the top Pro categories brothers Kyle and Todd LeDuc will go head-to-head for top honors in the Pro 4 Unlimited truck category, while it will be a three-way battle between defending champion Brian Deegan, Marty Hart and Rob MacCachren in the Pro 2 Unlimited truck field. In Pro Buggy Unlimited for open-wheel cars, the race for the 2012 championship crown will be a heated affair between veterans Steve Grieke and Doug Fortin Jr.
Other titles to be determined on the tough and treacherous eight-tenths of a mile, five-turn Firebird dirt course in the final round of championship points racing will take place in the Super Lite, Modified Kart, JR 1 and JR 2 classes. RJ Anderson has already clinched the 2012 title in the highly competitive Pro Lite Unlimited class, while John Fitzgerald earned the championship in Limited Buggy.
The following day all the pressure of running for championships will be set aside for a new goal for the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series drivers; the chance to emerge victorious with a specially made Lucas Oil Cup trophy and a piece of the massive cash prize fund.
While each of the classes will have their own separate Cup races, the big finale will take place on Sunday afternoon with a pair of off-road mash-ups, the Pro Lite versus Pro Buggy race followed by the high-horsepower Pro 2 versus Pro 4 battle royale. The former will feature a huge field of Pro Lite trucks starting side by side with an equally large number of nimble, open-wheel Pro Buggies all going after a $20,000 first place check.

The Lucas Oil Challenge Cup weekend will then culminate in the sport’s biggest names going door-to-door in exotic, 900 horsepower race trucks. The Pro 2 field, which is comprised of two-wheel drive unlimited trucks, will cross the starting line first, followed 40 seconds later by the faster four-wheel drive Pro 4 machines. As it has been in past years, fans are guaranteed to enjoy the year’s most action-packed race of the year – especially when a $30,000 first place prize is up for grabs.
“It’s hard to believe that we are down to the last race weekend in the 2012 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series season,” said Lucas Oil Vice-President Bob Patison. “This has been a watershed year in terms of this sport’s growth, exposure to mainstream fans via our incredible television package and also in attracting some of motorsports’ finest talent. Considering all of that, it is only fitting that we finish off 2012 with a bang. We are proud of the Lucas Oil Challenge Cup’s rather colorful history, not to mention adding a new chapter in Firebird next weekend.”
Gates open to the public at Firebird International Raceway both days at 9:00am, with racing all day. Official Opening Ceremonies slated for 12:30PM on Saturday and 1:00PM on Sunday. As always, the huge team pit areas are open to race fans both days and are included in the price of admission.
