Holland, MI (June 23, 2009) – Ross Hoek Motorsports made the trip around Lake Michigan to Crandon, Wisconsin with his World Championship winning Venom Energy Drink sponsored PRO-2WD and the front running SRT Limited 2 to compete in the Midwest rounds of the Traxxas TORC Series presented by AMSOIL. When RHM first arrived trackside, several new changes to the historic track were revealed. TORC and Crandon track officials added a rhythm section just after the finish line creating different approaches to the “S” turns, and the Gravel Pit Turn and the Argonne Loop were reconfigured to allow for improved passing zones.
Saturday Round 5
SRT Limited 2
First up Saturday morning for Ross Hoek was the Limited 2 race. The #210 Automatic Transmission Design Kumho Tires Ford F-150 charged down the long pit straightaway and came through Potawatomi Turn One just behind Keith Steele and Don Williams. Quickly, Steele moves around Williams for the top spot, meanwhile, Ross did the same a lap later. By the time #210 Ford got around Williams, the leader had opened up a large lead. Gradually, Ross cut into Steele’s lead and was challenging for the top spot when the steering on the truck developed a “tight spot”. Regardless, Ross continued to keep pace with the leader. The final two laps saw the ATD Ford make up some ground, but the laps just ran out. Officially, Ross Hoek took the checkered flag in second place.
The start, the middle, and the finish were all a wild ride for the #21 Venom Energy, Royal Purple Kumho Tire, Ford F-150. The track had dried out and the dust really kicked up when the landrush start of seventeen PRO-2WDs came through Turn One. Just as the Venom Energy Ford maneuvered its way into fourth place at the Traxxas Flight Zone, another competitor pinched the #21 into the inside wall of Calamity Corner. The result was a severely bent tie rod.
This brought Ross in to the pits for repairs. The crew quickly installed a new tie rod and the Venom Pro-2WD came out to continue the race at the mandatory caution. The Kumho Tire Ford was running sixth on the track and turning very fast lap times, but the repair put RHM down several laps. Ross crossed the finish line in thirteenth place.
Sunday – Round 6
SRT Limited 2
The day’s events saw a reversal of fortune for both Ross Hoek Motorsports race trucks. The #210 Auto Trans Design Limited 2 was off to a good start and engaged a heated battle for the second place spot. Unfortunately the ring and pinion broke on lap two ending the weekend for the #210
“The old girl was fast again today but I ran her a little hard trying to get up front and it bit us today,” commented Ross Hoek.
The seventeen truck PRO-2WD field was one of the strongest and largest groups to assemble in Crandon in a few years. Ross was the second fastest truck during Sunday morning qualifying, which positioned the truck in the eighth starting position on the front row.
The start saw the Venom Energy PRO-2WD come through the turn clean and in the front half of the field. Ross ran hard and started passing trucks. After the mandatory yellow, Ross picked up the pace looking for a Top-5 finish. Every corner of the track seemed to be filled with ruts. Amazingly Ross guided the #21 Ford F-150 past two competitors in the final three laps, crossing the finish in a very respectable fifth place.
“Today’s PRO-2WD race was extremely demanding, you were constantly changing your lines looking to avoid the deep holes,” noted Ross Hoek. “Our Swift Springs and Fox Shox really came through for us today. We very satisfied with a fifth place finish today, especially when you realize who we are competing against. Our Baer Brake Calipers really kept us on the game as well. I really used the brakes hard to avoid disaster several times. The Baer Calipers and Hawk Performance brake pads were just awesome. The ISP seat in our PRO-2WD was the best money we spent in years, after 10 brutal laps I was ready for 10 more!”
“Our Super Truck suffered a little today, we kept the ring and pinion in from last year and planned on changing it for Bark River. We came up just short on that. All in all, both trucks ran well this weekend.”
You can watch all the exciting TORC PRO racing action on ESPN2, this Sunday, June 28, 12:30pm eastern time.
Next Race; June 11-12, Bark River, Michigan.
