Gilbert, AZ – October 25, 2012 – Wayland Campbell had an ear to ear grin when we told him the Tsuda Brothers had invited him to Japan to compete in their Extreme Rockcrawling Event. Wayland was so excited to go to Japan he worked his butt off getting ahead in school and working with his Grandpa prepping his FAT VW powered Moon buggy to insure he had the best set up for Japan.
Wayland said, “This was a week I will never forget. It was crazy! We landed in Osaka and took a limousine to Yamato Yagi Station where Mr. Tsuda picked us up and took us to his shop where he hosted the kick off party. We got to meet all the competitors, several sponsors, fans, including the Marketing Manager of Goodyear Japan-Mr. Kiyohide Suzuki, some very nice professional pole dancers and believe it or not a new friend from our hometown Ethan Grunfeld that has been living in Japan for the last 5 years. It was awesome, he was able to translate so I could have a conversation with all my new friends and the party was a hit. So, they do things a little different in Japan, for starting order we played rock, paper, scissors and I was the lucky winner and got to start last.
The first few courses were perfect-scaling the walls and completing all the bonuses. Going into the final course of the day which was definitely the most difficult and close to the brink of destruction with 30 seconds left, I revved the little FAT motor and neutral dropped it and flew over the last obstacle to the finish. Just being invited was an honor but leaving with a 1st place trophy made it the best week of my life. The day after the event Naozumi took us out to do some deep sea fishing and we caught Mahi, Cod and Grouper. We went back to the Tsuda Racing shop, cooked up the fish and celebrated Masa’s birthday. I just turned 17 years old and this week has been filled with many firsts, my first time going out of the country, my first time deep sea fishing, my first pole dance and my very 1st win!”
