Ensenada, Baja California
Matt Cullen and Chuck Sacks drove their Alumi Craft / F&L Racing Fuel class 10 car to an impressive victory at the SCORE, Baja 500 in Ensenada, Mexico. The Baja 500 course makes a huge loop that covers just about every type of terrain that Baja has to offer. There are miles of sandy whoops, deep silt beds, rocky trails, narrow mountain roads with sheer cliffs and dry lakebeds that dare drivers to bury the throttle. In order to run fast and stay out front, you need skilled drivers and a car that excels in any terrain; like Matt’s Alumi Craft.
Matt and co-driver Mike Lombardi started fourth off the line but quickly moved up through the other Class 10 cars running first on the road before they reached Ojos Negros. Their Major Performance built, Honda power plant was churning out serious horsepower and their Fox Shox were soaking up everything in their path. They had a great run to mile 209 where they handed the car off to driver Chuck Sacks and his co-driver Layton Bowles.
Chuck and Layton continued to build a solid lead. Poised to embarrass many of the faster vehicles, an errant rock forced them to make a lengthy pit stop. The rock nicked the power steering filter, causing it to leak profusely. After repairs, they quickly got back up to speed; extending their lead over the rest of the class 10 field. They crossed the line 20 minutes ahead of 2nd place Mikey Lawrence.
“We had a great day,” said Matt, “The car was flawless. At one point, we were running ahead of several unlimited cars and Trophy Trucks in 8th place overall. Dave Willey performed an awesome prep job and our BFG tires from Parkhouse tire were perfect.”
