Meet Johnny Greaves. If you’re an off-road racing fan you should be well acquainted with him, but now he’s racing for Maxxis Tires, so we get the opportunity to reacquaint you with this legend. Johnny has more championships and podiums than we can count, and to top it off was last year’s TORC Series Champion for the Pro-4 class. Adding to his legend, Johnny is also the world record holder for longest jump in a 4-wheel vehicle, having jumped a Pro-2 over 300 feet in 2009. To say that having Johnny on the Maxxis Racing team is big deal is an understatement. Here’s a few words with the champ:
How did you get your start in off-road racing?
I was racing bikes at Crandon, back when they still allowed bikes, and I decided to hang around and watch the cars race in the afternoon. That weekend I traded my dirtbike for a buggie, and I was back the next weekend racing. I just moved up the ladder from there. I f you find something you love and your good at, do it. The rest will figure itself out.
What’s your favorite racing memory?
It’s got to be the Borg-Warner Cups at Crandon. Those were the most gratifying and also the toughest races. Everybody goes all out and it get’s rough.
Who did/do you look up to in racing?
When I first started out, it was definitely Ivan Stewart when he was a part of the Toyota program. He really helped me during the early stages of my career. For my contemporaries, I admire what Rob MacCachren is doing, he seems to have racing down to an art form.
What’s your favorite race track?
Definitely Bark River. It’s got the speed of Crandon, but still is challenging with great obstacles like double-doubles. It’s a fast track, which I’m liking more and more lately. 100mph sideways in a pro-4 separates the men form the boys.
Any advice for anyone that wants to get into off-road racing?
Start small. Don’t worry about having all the big rigs and everything else. Concentrate on the racing and the cream always rises to the top. Keep pecking your way up the ladder and if you’re good you will get there.
