CRANDON, Wis. – The first “Sportsman King of Off-Road Racing” has been crowned. Mitch Dorr, Rockford, Ill., claimed the title at Crandon International Off-Road Raceway last weekend for his team and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., becoming the first off-road racer in history to win the Mole Lake Casino & Lodge Stock Truck Silver Cup Race.
Dorr, the “Rookie-of-the-Year” in Midwest off-road racing action last year, earned the title with a convincing victory in the richest and most prestigious Sportsman off-road race ever held. The special Cup race was announced by the Mole Lake Sokaogon Band of Chippewa’s Tribe and Crandon Raceway officials in honor of the 40th anniversary of short course off-road racing in the U.S., being celebrated this year at Crandon.
It was the opening race of the season for Dorr and 11 other Stock Trucks in the field. The Stock Truck class is an entry level “stepping stone” division to the Pro two-wheel drive class in the TORC racing series. Dorr powered his bright red Ford F150 on Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tires with Kevlar, around Crandon’s famous 1.5-mile track, taking the lead at the halfway point of the race and never looked back.
Dorr won the lion’s share of a $10,000 purse for the race – the largest ever posted for a Sportsman race.
“This is a huge victory for Mitch and we are just happy he achieved this significant accomplishment on four new Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tires with Kevlar,” said Jack Cummings, manager, off-road racing programs, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. “Mitch is the first driver to win a race at Crandon with this new Goodyear Tire model,” said Cummings. “We trust he will win again and again on Goodyear’s this season”.
Crandon Raceway is revered as the fastest and most punishing off-road race track in the country. “It means everything to not only win at Crandon for Goodyear but also to be the first Stock Truck racer to win the Mole Lake Silver Cup,” said Dorr.
“The track was fast but became rutted with lots of loose rocks,” he said. “It was my first race on the new Goodyear’s with Kevlar. The race was grueling and fast-paced, but the tires looked brand new at the finish line. The new Goodyear tire delivered me to the checkered flag and I have tremendous confidence in the brand. I thank Goodyear and Jack Cummings a s well as Raceline Wheels for helping me win this inaugural Cup race.”
Dorr is also the first driver to win at Crandon on Raceline Wheels. In addition to the Mole Lake Silver Cup and huge payday, Dorr was quickly nabbed by the motor sports media for interviews, including the call-in “Driver of the Week” on the The Garage House hosted by Justin Fort, an AM radio station in San Diego, Calif.
Dorr accepted the Mole Lake Silver Cup in victory circle from Arlyn Ackley, Sr., chairman of the Mole Lake Band of Chippewa’s. Ackley noted it was a historic moment for Dorr, his Tribe, Crandon Raceway, Goodyear, Raceline Wheels and Ford.
“Mitch and his sponsors will be remembered by race fans for this victory,” said Ackley. “There can only be one first and it will be Mitch Dorr.”
Cummings noted that Goodyear uses off-road racing as a proving ground for the company’s new and existing products. “We provide our racers with stock tires that light-duty truck owners can buy at any Goodyear retail outlet,” said Cummings. “Off-road racing fans can purchase the same great Goodyear MT/R with Kevlar tires that Mitch Dorr used to make history,” he said.
Dorr next travels to Bark River International Off-Road Raceway where he will see action in the TORC Sportsman races July 11-12. Crandon will again feature a Mole Lake Casino Stock Truck Cup race at the annual World Championship Off-Road Races, September 4-6, 2009 over Labor Day Weekend.
