Rain, thunder, and mud couldn’t stop the Monster Energy Off-Road team from standing on the podium at the TORC season opener at the legendary RedBud Motocross track in Buchanan, Michigan. Pro-4 Champion Johnny Greaves along with Marty Hart, Casey Currie, and Pro-Lite rookie CJ Greaves battled the elements and an ultra muddy new track to come away with two podiums. The newly created truck course was a combination of tight technical turns, off-camber jumps and elevation changes, unlike any other course in off-road. The thousands of dedicated Michigan race fans braved the weather to witness the premier of TORC short course racing at the newly anointed short course off-road racetrack at RedBud.
On Saturday, due to rain on an already messy track Pro-Lites were the only pro class to race. Casey Currie took the opportunity to charge to the podium. Showing he was ready to do whatever it took to podium; Casey boosted off the massive hill top jump gaining two positions. After getting caught in multiple bottlenecks, Casey ferociously worked his way all the way from them back up to 2nd place. CJ Greaves premiere in the Pro-Lite class would prove to be a rude welcoming as he was taken out of the race due to mechanical issues.
On Sunday after raining almost the entire night, the track was actually worse than the previous day. Yet, the drivers wanted to race for the benefit of the fans that had braved rain, thunderstorms, and tornado warnings to witness history being made at RedBud.
Pro-4 champion Johnny Greaves started attacking right away moving quickly to the lead. On the first lap Johnny overshot the massive hill top jump and ended up stuck in the 4+ feet of mud that had accumulated in the bank of the turn. After the safety crew were able to dislodge the buried truck Johnny soldiered on even though he was moved to the back of the pack. Now it was about giving the fans what they came for, intense off-road action.
In Pro-2, Marty Hart rocketed off the start jumping to the third position but the attack for the front position would be short lived as Marty landed on his side off the pipe jump severely smashing his back end. Miraculously Marty saved the truck from rolling but only managed to limp the truck half a lap until he was stopped. A disappointing end to his day.
In Pro-Lite, CJ greaves started in the front, and Pro-Lite champion Casey Currie stated mid-pack. CJ managed to get out to an early lead. Casey was stuck mid pack being battered by mud and competitors. CJ lead most of the race only making minor mistakes and only allowing one truck to squeeze past him. In the end CJ managed to pull off a 2nd place finish in his Pro-Lite debut.
