     ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—When it comes to SCORE racing in Baja California, Mexico, no one does it with more experience, more wisdom, more knowledge and more overall victories than ageless Hall of Fame racer Larry Roeseler. ‘Mr. Baja’, as he is respectfully called, is one of nearly 70 early entries so far in next month’s 2nd SCORE Baja 400, presented by VP Racing Fuels, until August 27, on the SCORE website. At age 64, Roeseler, prepares to race again in the No. 43 Baja Jerky Cantina Racing Toyota Tundra.
WHEN
The youngest race in the long and storied nearly 50-year history of the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization will be held Sept. 14-19 in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.
WHO…WHAT
Online racer registration along with a detailed schedule of events both are now available on the SCORE website for Round 3 of the four-race 2021 SCORE World Desert Championship. Entries from all across the United States and around the world competing in classes for cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads are anticipated for the upcoming internationally-televised desert race in Mexico’s Baja California.
WHERE
The race and pre-race festivities are scheduled to be held in and around the heart of Ensenada, the seaside port on the Pacific Ocean, 80 miles south of San Diego. The race will be conducted under the strict guidelines and BioSecurity protocols required by the Mexican Health Department at the time of the event.
EARLY ENTRIES
Of the 69 early entries after just one week of online racer registration, 12 U.S. States are represented plus racers from host Mexico, Canada and France.
Leading the way are SCORE Trophy Truck (including two in SCORE TT Legend) has 30 entries so far and the Trophy Truck Spec class which has 18 entries to date.

LR THE MAN
With more SCORE Baja racing experience in years than most racers have in age, Roeseler continues to be among the top contenders in any SCORE Baja race.
A racing legend on both sides of the Border and around the world, Roeseler has been inducted into the Hall of Fame of both the American Motorcycle Association and Off-Road Motorsports.
Roeseler simply goes by ‘Mr. Baja’ in Mexico. Living in Boulevard, Calif., he has been racing in SCORE Baja races since the early 1970s with an unrivaled record of excellence both on two wheels as well as four wheels. He has four career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins in his long career.
In the SCORE World Desert Championship, Roeseler has won 12 season class point championships (1976, 1977, 1981, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2020).
In the SCORE Baja 1000, LR, as he is also known by friends and competitors, has a race-record 14 overalls (including 10 on motorcycles) among his 18 career class wins.
In the SCORE Baja 500, Roeseler now has 12 overall wins (nine on motorcycles) among his 18 career class wins in that race.
In the SCORE San Felipe 250, Roeseler has two overalls (both on motorcycles) and six class wins in four different classes. In motorcycles, Roeseler has a win in both the old Class 21 (Under 250cc) and Class 22 (unlimited), two Class 7 race wins (stock mini trucks) and two in the unlimited Class 1 (open wheel cars).
This year Roeseler is the solo driver in SCORE Trophy Truck for the No. 43 Cantina Racing Baja Jerky Toyota Tundra built by ID Designs.
In his first race with the team in last year’s SCORE Baja 500, held in San Felipe for the second time, he finished fifth in SCORE Trophy Truck.
In last year’s season finale at the SCORE Baja 1000 he drove the first half of the race for the overall winning Luke McMillin.
In the SCORE San Felipe 250 this year, Roeseler finished 11th out of 35 starters. Before winning this year’s SCORE Baja 500 overall.
Roeseler is racing the full 2021 SCORE World Desert Championship for Cantina Racing, under sponsorship with Baja Jerky.
Q&A WITH LR
Catching up with the busy Roeseler, SCORE had a question-and-answer session with the legendary racer recently as he begins his preparations for the 2nd SCORE Baja 400, presented by VP Racing Fuels…
SCORE: Tells us a little bit about your family.
“I have a very supportive family. My wife Karla is from Mexicali, and we have been married now for six years. We have a son Gabriel, who is five and a daughter Stella who is three years old. I also have an older daughter that’s not living with us, Lexee is 13. And, of course, it all started with my father, my first mini bike at five years old, it was always a family outing to the desert to ride and race.”
SCORE: When you aren’t racing or pre-running, what occupies your time these days? 
     “That’s a loaded question… as mentioned above, Karla, Gabriel, Stella and Lexee. Honestly family time is super important. As everyone knows things around the house, cars trucks, UTVs, motorcycles, bicycles, Laundry, the garage, and then in between all that we like to do fun things, like a beach day or riding my dirt bike.”
SCORE: How did your sponsorship with Baja Jerky come about? And were you already committed to Cantina Racing before the big sponsorship came through?
“Eric Brandt is Baja Jerky, he’s good friends with Chris Miller, owner of Cantina Racing. Eric purchased some of Cantina’s equipment and wanted to go racing. My name got brought up and they contacted me, I had a meeting with Eric and we came to an agreement. So, it has been a Baja Jerky relationship from the beginning.”
SCORE: What are your first memories of racing in SCORE Baja races?
“1972 was my first Baja race, of course that was before SCORE, I’ve been there ever since, only missed a few due to injuries in my motorcycle days.”
SCORE: You have raced for several teams in your hall of fame career.  In SCORE Baja racing, what is a shining moment for you from each one of them? 
“Of course, many things stand out, riding for Factory teams, Husqvarna, Yamaha and Kawasaki on motorcycles. Amazing partners, Jack Johnson, Bruce Ogilvie, Paul Krause, Ted Hunnicutt Jr, Danny LaPorte, Marty Smith, Ty Davis, Danny Hamel.”
“Then making the switch to 4 wheels, being a part of Walker Evans Racing in 1995, MacPherson Chevy team for four years, PPI Toyota in 2000 for the SCORE Baja 2000 was epic. being with the Herbst family for many years in both the Landshark and SCORE Trophy Trucks, Roger Norman in 2008 and winning both the Mint 400 and the SCORE Baja 1000.”
“More Importantly people like Mark Johnson, Curt Leduc, Joe MacPherson, Jerry McDonald, Sean Hogland, Eric Brandt, all the mechanic’s all the volunteer’s, family, friends, fans is what makes it all a shining career. Sure I’m riding or driving but couldn’t do it without good people having my back!”
SCORE: At 64, how do you stay in physical and mental shape?
“That’s easy. Family, young wife, kids and my dirt bike!”
SCORE: What are a couple of your best motorcycle race memories in SCORE Baja racing?
     “Wow, so many great memories, 1976 SCORE Baja 1000, winning with Jack Johnson being my first SCORE Baja 1000 overall, super crazy race, day delay due to rain. Then again in 1979 with Jack, went to La Paz that year and was just him and I. I rode to El Arco and gave him a 45-minute lead. And, of course, 1994 winning again OA with Danny Hamel and Ty Davis in the SCORE Baja 1000, that one being my last one on a bike. Then the 2004 SCORE Baja 1000 winning OA with Troy Herbst in the Truggy, super special. And for sure last year 2020 with Luke McMillin, being part of history making, love the McMillins and helping Luke get his first SCORE Baja 1000 overall was very special, brought tears to my eyes. I could go on and on, so many great races and memories.”
SCORE: Of all of the people you have raced with on a motorcycle in SCORE Baja racing, who were the top 2 and why? 
“Jack Johnson was always rock solid, never give up attitude, not to mention fast on a bike. Gonna have to say Ty Davis and Danny Hamel as partners, nobody could catch us…. haha. Amazing guys, super talented. Again, knowing they gave it 100% always.
SCORE: Tell us about your new team, Baja Jerky Cantina Racing.
“Eric Brandt is Baja Jerky. He’s good friends with Chris Miller/ Eric being a desert-racing fan forever and then in a position to start his own team that’s when my name got brought up. Baja Jerky being a new product Eric thought what not a better way to show case it. The Cantina shop is prepping everything and Baja Jerky is helping to offset the overhead. Sales are doing well and the growth and distribution is getting better by the day.”
SCORE: You seem to be able to attract sponsors in a sport that isn’t known for getting many major sponsors. What’s your secret?
“Don’t think it’s any secret. Just think my results and consistency attract the ones looking to go racing.
SCORE: What more tweaking are you and your team doing to get more out of your SCORE Trophy Truck for the rest of this season?
     “Our current truck is like 13 years old, it’s an ID Designs, don’t get me wrong… it’s a very good truck. Old or new you are always trying to make it better from the last race. We’re working on suspension settings always and now some torque converter numbers. and always a good prep is key to any pre-race.”
SCORE: Of all of your SCORE Baja victories, which one means the most to you and why?
“Honestly, I can’t say there’s just one. they all have a special moment, a special story of its own. Of course, the 1994 SCORE Baja 1000 is right up there, being my 10th overall win, teamed with Ty Davis and Danny Hamel.”
“After that race is when I told Kawasaki that’s enough, time for me to step down, and having riders like Ty and Danny to carry the torch I was good with that and also already started to build my pre-runner and was getting the word out I wanted to get behind a steering wheel. Sad to say the next SCORE Baja 500 in June of 1995 is when the non-race pulled out in front of Danny and he died from his injuries. After that Kawasaki also said that is enough also.”
SCORE: What’s left on your SCORE journey to accomplish?
“Honestly….nothing about winning. Just give it 100% as I always do, do a good job for Baja Jerky, and this upcoming SCORE Baja 1000 maybe drive it solo…..we’ll see.”
GREEN FLAG
It is an elapsed-time race with staggered starts as the green flag on Saturday (Sept. 18) will drop first for the motorcycles and quads at 6 a.m. (PDT) and approximately 10 a.m. (PDT) for the cars, trucks and UTVs. While the fastest vehicles are expected to finish in around eight hours, all vehicles will have a 20-hour time limit to become official finishers in the race.
THE FIELD
Nearly 200 vehicles are expected at the start line for this second-time SCORE race with racers from as many as 20 U.S. States and 10 countries anticipated. SCORE major sponsor BFGoodrich Tires has posted a US$5,000 contingency bonus for the overall 4-wheel race winner to help commemorate this newest race on the SCORE schedule.
START GRID-SCORE BAJA 1000
The results of the SCORE Baja 400 also will determine the start order within each class for November’s iconic season-ending BFGoodrich Tires 54th SCORE Baja 1000, presented by 4 Wheel Parts.
DRAW DEADLINE
The starting order within each class for this race (except for the classes that are qualifying), will be determined by a random drawing for those entries received online and paid in full by 8 p.m. (PDT) on Friday, August 27 when online racer registration officially closes.
No additional entries will be accepted after 8 p.m. PDT on Friday, August 27. Late, on-site racer registration will be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (Sept. 15, 16, 17).
PRE-RUNNING
Official practice, or pre-running, on the official 407.40-miles race course for this year’s 2nd SCORE Baja 400 will open at 8 a.m. PDT on Saturday, Sept. 4. Pre-running will start at race mile 40.00 and finish at race mile 367.40. The first 40.0 miles, which will be used in both directions during the race, will be available for pre-running only on Thursday (Sept. 16) and Friday (Sept. 17) and only in the outbound direction.
QUALIFYING
Qualifying for starting positions within their respective classes will be held on Wednesday (Sept. 16}, starting at 8 a.m. PDT. Classes that will be qualifying for the SCORE Baja 400 are SCORE Trophy Truck, SCORE TT Legend, the unlimited Class 1 and the Trophy Truck Spec class.
MAIN COURSE
The race will feature a course, when fully plotted and then marked over the next several weeks by SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva, of 407.40 miles of rugged Baja California terrain.
The challenging race course will be another memorable example of all that Mexico’s Baja California has to offer, including high-speed dirt trails, sandy, rocky and silty natural terrain, majestic Baja washes and canyons, stretches along the seashore with elevations from sea level to over 3,000 feet. The course will be another jewel reflecting the stark beauty of Baja California.
A HAPPENING…
With all activities subject to the current Mexican Health Department BioSecurity protocols, SCORE has announced a race-week schedule similar to pre-pandemic times.
Colorful race week festivities will start on Wednesday, Sept. 14 to help celebrate this newest SCORE Baja race. They will be held in or adjacent to the landmark Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada.
Chassis inspections and pre-tech/Stella devise check and installation will be held on Wednesday (Sept. 14) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PDT by appointment and on Thursday (Sept. 15) chassis inspection/pre-tech/Stella bracket check and installation will be held at a location to be determined.
Friday (Sept. 17) will see the colorful day-long, pre-race Manufacturer’s Midway and contingency festival in the start finish line area in Ensenada. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PDT each day contingency row will be held for all classes. Tech inspection/Transponder checks/Stella/SPICA device pickup will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. PDT on Friday as well at the end of the manufacturer’s row.
During the race on Saturday, Sept. 18 until the course closes on Sunday morning, Sept. 19, the start/finish line compound will include the massive double-sided SCOREvision LED screen broadcasting race festivities and start and finish line interviews. Popular Rat Sult will once again serve as host of the SCORE Live streaming.
All of the week’s festivities will be streamed both live and same-day including the race, airing via the internet on the SCORE website.
AT THE RIVIERA…
The historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center, in the heart of Ensenada, will again be the site of many of the activities surrounding the 2nd SCORE Baja 400, presented by VP Racing Fuels. Racer registration and media registration will both be held in the Red Room on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (Sept. 15-17).
Racer registration will be held on Wednesday (Sept. 15) from 12 Noon to 8 p.m. PDT along with 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PDT on Thursday (Sept. 16) and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. PDT on Friday (Sept. 17).
On Wednesday, no new entries will be accepted after 7 p.m. PDT, on Thursday after 4 p.m. PDT and on Friday, no new entries will be accepted after 3 p.m. PDT
Media registration the Red Room will be held on Wednesday (Sept. 15) from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. PDT and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PDT on both Thursday (Sept. 16) and Friday (Sept. 17).
The SCORE Media Center will be in the Red Room during the race (Sept. 18-19) with internet access and live race updates, vehicle tracking displays including unofficial elapsed times.
The start/finish line for the race will once again be adjacent to the iconic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center on Blvd. Costero.
AT THE LUCERNA…
On Friday (Sept. 17) at the Torre Lucerna Hotel in Ensenada will be the mandatory aircraft and Drone pilots meeting at 6 pm. PDT, the mandatory pre-race racer’s meeting at 7 p.m. PDT. The post-race awards celebration will also be at the Torre Lucerna Hotel at 2 p.m. PDT on Sunday (Sept. 19).
GRAN HISTORIA
The first Baja 500 organized and produced by SCORE was held on July 26, 1974 as the first of over 150 SCORE Baja races to date.
Ensenada is the heart and soul of the SCORE Baja races. Ensenada has hosted the start line 47 times and the finish line 43 times for the SCORE Baja 500. For the iconic SCORE Baja 1000, Ensenada will be hosting the start line this November for the 47th time and the finish line will be in La Paz, Baja California Sur for the 22nd time.

ESPN TV NETWORKS AGAIN IN 2021
For the third straight year, the 2021 SCORE World Desert Championship races are airing on the ESPN family of networks. The four-races will air as specials on the World of X Games program on ESPN2.
ABC first covered the 1967 and 1968 Baja 1000 races on the old ABC Wide World of Sports show with Jim McKay and again in the late 1980s with veteran motorsports journalists Sam Posey and Jack Arute.
All of the SCORE race coverage shows also continue to air internationally in nearly 25 countries in Europe, Asia, Latin America and South America via syndication and ESPN International. The shows are co-produced by SCORE International and SoCal’s award-winning BCII TV.
